🌿 Texas Native Hardwood Mulch vs. Texas Native Cedar Mulch 🌿
Which one is right for your landscape? Here’s a quick breakdown 👇
🔹 Texas Native Hardwood Mulch
Best for soil health & plant growth

Naturally enriches the soil as it breaks down
Improves moisture retention for flower beds and trees
Medium-to-dark brown color for a classic, natural look
Breaks down faster, adding organic matter to the soil
âś… Great for gardens, flower beds, and plant-heavy landscapes

🔹 Texas Native Cedar Mulch
Best for long-lasting protection & pest resistance

Naturally repels insects like termites, ants, and roaches
Slower to decompose, so it lasts longer
Light to reddish color with a fresh cedar scent
Excellent w**d suppression
✅ Ideal for house foundations, walkways, and low‑maintenance areas

🌱 Bottom Line:

Choose Hardwood Mulch if you want healthier soil and thriving plants
Choose Cedar Mulch if you want durability, pest resistance, and low maintenance

Not all grass farms are the same. One field may be greener and more lush than the field Nextdoor. What we have in stock is fresh cut and you will see patches of green and yellow. So what causes these patches? Patchy green vs. yellow areas usually come down to how grass responds to stress, dormancy, and uneven growing conditions.

🌱 Dormant grass (why it turns yellow/brown)

Dormancy is basically a survival mode. Grass slows or stops growth to conserve energy when conditions aren’t ideal.

Common triggers:

* Cold weather (winter dormancy for warm-season grasses like Bermuda or St. Augustine)
* Drought / heat stress
* Lack of nutrients, especially nitrogen

When dormant:

* Grass turns yellow, tan, or brown
* It’s still alive at the root level
* Growth is minimal or completely paused

⸻

✂️ Freshly cut grass (why yellow shows up after mowing)

Sometimes grass looks yellow right after mowing, and that’s not dormancy—it’s exposure.

Here’s why:

* The top of the blade is green because it gets sunlight
* The lower portion is naturally lighter/yellowish
* If you cut too low (scalping), you expose that lower section

Result:

* Lawn looks patchy or pale right after mowing
* Especially noticeable if mowing height wasn’t consistent

⸻

🌿 Why you get green patches next to yellow patches

This is where things get interesting—lawns are rarely uniform.

1. Uneven watering

* Some areas hold moisture better (low spots, shaded areas)
* Others dry out faster (high spots, full sun)
→ Greener patches = more water
→ Yellow patches = drought stress

2. Soil compaction

* High-traffic areas get compacted
* Roots struggle to grow and access oxygen/water
→ Leads to weak, yellow grass

3. Nutrient distribution

* Fertilizer may not be spread evenly
* Organic matter varies across the yard
→ Some areas thrive, others starve

4. Thatch or buildup

* Thick thatch layers can block water and nutrients
→ Causes inconsistent growth

5. Different grass types or health

* You might have a mix of species (common in older lawns)
* Some go dormant faster than others

⸻

🛠️ How to fix or improve it

* Raise your mowing height (avoid scalping)
* Water deeply and evenly (not shallow daily watering)
* Aerate compacted areas (especially in clay-heavy soils like around Houston)
* Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost to even things out
* Top with mulch or compost to help retain moisture (you’re already in that industry—you know how powerful that is)

⸻

Simple way to tell what you’re dealing with:

* Yellow but firm grass + no growth → likely dormant
* Yellow right after mowing → likely cut too low
* Patchy with weak growth → soil/water/nutrient issue.
