resist the clean up temptation

James McCrery II, AIA, a classical architect in a small Washington firm known for Roman Catholic church design and construction, a life member of the Supreme Court Historical Society, National Design Peer of the US General Services Administration, awarded by the American Institute of Architects, member of the US Commission of Fine Arts, was handpicked by POTUS to design a ballroom-banquet hall to the White House. According to Mr McCrery (whose credentials are excellent), the 90,000 s.f. addition could overwhelm the remainder of the half-as-big White House (gosh, ya think?), violating a basic architectural rule – don’t allow an addition to dwarf the original. Even landscape architects know such design principles as balance and proportion, and respect for historical-cultural context when changing structures (and sites, like a paved over Rose Garden, and adding not one but two 88-100' flagpoles on the White House lawn, dwarfing the more modest rooftop pole whose flag flying traditionally indicated president in residence). Not that common citizen opinion matters, but I'm with you, Mr McCrery. Such terms as gauche come to mind, to put it mildly.
