🌺🔥 SOME FLOWERS WHISPER. MALTESE CROSS USES A MEGAPHONE. 🔥🌺
Have you ever grown Maltese Cross, or is this old-fashioned beauty new to you? Let me know below! 👇
Maltese Cross (Lychnis chalcedonica) has been lighting up gardens for centuries. Native to Eastern Europe and Asia, it produces brilliant scarlet-red flower clusters that practically glow across the yard.
While other perennials politely bloom, Maltese Cross shows up dressed like a fire truck at a beige convention. 😂
🌺 Why gardeners love it:
• Brilliant scarlet-red blooms
• Butterfly and hummingbird magnet
• Deer and rabbit resistant
• Excellent cut flower
• Easy-to-grow cottage garden favorite
• Long-lived and easy to divide
📋 Growing Info:
• Height: 3–4 ft
• Width: 18–24 in
• Sun: Full Sun
• Bloom Time: June–July
• Hardiness: Zones 3–8
• Soil: Average to well-drained
• Drought Tolerance: Moderate once established
💧 Cache Valley Watering:
First year: Deep water 1–2 times weekly during hot weather.
Established plants: Usually every 7–10 days.
🫎 Moose Logic: Deep watering grows strong roots. Daily sips create plant couch potatoes.
🌻 Great companions:
• Salvia
• Russian Sage
• Catmint
• Yarrow
• Coneflower
• Lavender
Fun fact: The flowers are so bright red they make nearby pink flowers question their career choices.
Another fun fact: You can walk into a garden center for one plant and leave with twelve. Science has yet to solve this mystery.
🫎 If you made it this far, comment RED HOT and tell us where you’d plant this fiery beauty!
Because every garden deserves at least one plant that absolutely refuses to blend in. 🌺🔥
