This is a memorial page in honor of the Original Sluice Box and its owners. And will stand as a true testament to Lawrence Carter's talents in construction and to the old western architecture that he chose to share with the world. Due to Larry's passing in 2010, the store has been sold to new owners as of July 2014. Be sure to read the 'notes' sections for fun stories about Larry's past and to hel

p try and find any family of Larry's that might still be out there somewhere.

Well, it's that time of year... If Larry was still here and still owned the store you all could anticipate unique holiday decorations. It used to be quite fun. His person-size church that he built using cut tin cans as shingles on the steeple, with the little cutout singing kids that he cut and painted made for quite the festive scene. Does anyone remember those days?

Found this license plate at Ruth's the other day. I had to inspect it closer before I realized why it had been saved. 1928, Larry's birth year. I'm sure he was really proud of this find. ❤️

You all surely know that when Larry came west as a teenager, one of his first jobs was at the Dewey Palace hotel. He had a ton of stories from there too. I seem to recall something about a women that always stayed and constantly peed the bed, and another one about having to shoot the pigeons off the roof. It was different times then for sure.

When the stately Idanha, with its castle-like towers, opened on Jan. 1, 1901, it was the largest hotel in Idaho. On that same day the Idaho Statesman published a line drawing of a proposed Dewey Palace hotel for Nampa. Two years later, in February 1903, Col. William H. Dewey’s hotel, in a style ve...

Thought I'd share. Just about 40 years ago, when Ruth and Larry lived in Nampa ID, this was in their living room. Their youngest daughter (me) played in this fountain with my dolls. Ruth kept blue food coloring in the water, so my favorite little dolls all ended up with greenish blue hair from swimming in the water. 😉 When the store burned down, this had been filled with water which froze and busted it in half during that winter. After it was given to me I restored it with boat putty and craft paint, and today it's just as beautiful as I remember it being in Nampa. ❤️

We made a trip up to see the store. Haven't been to Idaho City since Larry (dad) passed. It was bitter sweet. The store still seems the same, but all the stuff that made it amazing has been removed. No more wagons, signs or license plates, no old stuff really at all. I hope the new owners, whoever they may be, add back to the amazing building that it was. It would be nice to see it in it's glory again. The shell that stands there today is just a sad memory.

Just in case you're planning a visit to Idaho City or the surrounding areas.

Welcome to Boise County,

While we are just a short drive from Boise city our landscape is much different. We do want you to enjoy your time in Boise County so here are a few tips and recommendations to help you enjoy our county. If you are a local it won’t hurt to read these tips as a refresher as we see some of you have forgotten these common practices.

1) Please clean up after yourself. Leaving your trash for someone else to clean up is rude and a sure way to make everyone upset.

2) Cell Phones: Cell service becomes very unreliable once you leave the main towns in Boise County. Within a mile or two of town you can be on your own with no way to phone for help.

3) Winter Roads: Your car probably does not handle snow like it does in the tv commercials. We gets a lot of calls every winter from people who find themselves stuck in the ditches or worse because they were not prepared for the winter roads. Keep in mind you may have to walk a ways to get cell service to get help. Reference tip # 2.

4) Christmas Trees: You need a permit to harvest a Christmas tree. Please have a map or get a map so you know where you can legally cut down Christmas trees. Also, your Christmas tree permit does not give you special parking privileges on the side of any road. The snow plows get really upset when they have to double their work because cars decide to park wherever they like. (Centerville road in Idaho City is really abused during Christmas Tree season.)

5) Recreational Parking: There are many recreational parking areas in Boise County for Snowmobiles, Skiing, Snowshoeing, and other outdoor fun things. Once the recreational parking is full you have to move on to the next designated parking area. You will be ticketed, towed, and or crashed into if you park on the side of the highway outside the recreational areas. Please be mindful of other users and park responsibly. Please have a plan for your own rescue if you are travelling in the mountains of Boise County. Refer to tip # 2.

6) Rescue: Keep in mind that Boise County has about 1 deputy on duty in whatever area you find yourself lost or in trouble. BCSO deputies and rescue personnel are very familiar with tip # 3 and will exercise caution when traveling roads to rescue you. You might have to survive for hours or even days on your own before being rescued so please come prepared.

7) Personal GPS location beacons such as Spot, Inreach, and other devices are always advised to help you know where you are and help rescuers get to you sooner.

😎 Please let someone know where you are going. We get many calls for overdue people with the location of ,”they are by some trees and a creek near a dirt road.” As you can imagine this description will not get you found very quickly.

Thank you for reading and abiding by these helpful tips.
