In 1796, the Board of Trustees of the Linen and Hempen Manufactures of Ireland (more commonly known as the “Irish Linen Board”), introduced incentives for flax growers, which aimed to boost crop production and expand the Irish linen industry. As part of this initiative, the board compiled a comprehensive list of nearly 60,000 individuals in Ireland who had received awards of basic machinery on account of the quantity of flax they had planted between March and July 1796. The beneficiaries are listed by name, civil parish and county, and a searchable database is available online (here: https://www.failteromhat.com/flax1796.php). This is a particularly useful resource for genealogical researchers.

Growers who had planted one rood (¼ acre) of flax seed were entitled to one spinning wheel; those who had sown between 1 and 5 acres were awarded four spinning wheels, while those growing more than 5 acres were given a loom or “Wheels, Reels, or Hatchells to the Value of 50 shillings”.
