🐻 Prevent Bears From Breaking Into Your Garage – Local Tips From Incline Door Company 🐻
Living in the Sierra means sharing our space with wildlife — and lately, more of us are finding out the hard way that garage doors are a favorite entry point for hungry bears.
Here are a few ways to protect your home, vehicles, and food storage:
🔒 1. Make sure your garage door is fully closing.
Snow, debris, or a failing sensor can keep the door slightly raised — and even a few inches is enough for a bear to pry it open.
🛠 2. Check the strength of your door & hardware.
Thin, older panels or weakened tracks make it much easier for a bear to push through. If your door flexes easily or shakes when opening, it’s time for reinforcement.
🍗 3. Keep all food, trash, bird seed & pet food out of your garage.
Bears can smell it from amazing distances. Even packaged food or empty coolers can attract them.
🧊 4. Avoid keeping a refrigerator or freezer in your garage.
Even if there’s no food inside, the constant hum and vibration of the appliance attracts bears. They associate the sound with possible food sources — and will break in to find out.
🚫 5. Never leave your garage cracked for ventilation at night.
It’s basically an invitation. If you need airflow, consider adding a screened vent or a secure side-door option.
💡 6. Add security features.
Manual slide locks, heavy-duty struts, and upgraded openers with strong hold-force are all great deterrents.
🔍 7. If your garage door has damage, gaps, or isn’t sealing well—get it inspected.
Bears look for weak points. A quick tune-up can make a big difference.
