What’s soil? We know it when we see it, but what’s it composed of? Soil consists of air, water, minerals and organic matter (roots, humus and organisms). Plants take up nutrients to feed themselves and return nutrients to “feed the soil,” i.e., the organisms living in the soil that break down matter to make useable “food” for the plants! This is a very simple description of the soil food web. But, how do you know the nutrients that are available in your garden’s soil? Which types of plants thrive in the soil nutrients available to them in your garden? And what should you do - if anything - to change the ratio of nutrients in your garden’s soil to accommodate a type of plant you want to grow? The most basic answer for these questions? TEST, don’t guess. Extension Master Gardeners are available to help in person every Tuesday and Thursday through the summer and fall from 10am-1pm at Hiram Young School, 501 N Dodgion in Independence. They can assist packaging soil samples, completing a form, and then provide you with advice about completed test results. Know your soil, grow your garden, and we are here to help! Stop by and see us.

Do you seed save? If so, why? If not, why not? Seed saved from hybridized plants may not grow true to form. But seed from open pollinated plants, whether “heirloom” or a newer variety, will grow true like the parent plant you’re saving from. How do you know hybrid vs open pollinated? Look at the plant tag, ask questions, check reputable seed company websites online, or ask an Extension Master Gardener or call our MGGKC Hotline. A little research will reveal the answer!

Did you know that perfection in the garden is an unattainable goal? There’s no such thing! Mother Nature and our own lives throw curveballs at us all of the time. Especially this time of the year, when the last of the spring crops are coming out, corn and tomatoes are going in, w**ds appear no matter how much pulling we do, slugs damage hosta, and the violas in windowboxes “need” to be replaced with heat-loving flowers. The overwhelm of it all can take away the fun and joy of being outdoors in the sunshine! So resolve to not strive for perfection. Nature will do “its thing” no matter how hard you try to make a perfect garden and no matter how many social media (paid) influencers show you only the good. Instead, get out there and pick up a trumpet, dance, lead the parade, and have fun with your life in the garden! 🕺💃🌞
