The transition between May and June is a threshold—a humid sigh before the true heat of the Kansas summer descends. For your indoor tropicals, it’s a time of frantic, silent growth, and they shouldn’t have to spend it in soil that feels like a coffin. Most store-bought "potting mixes" are little more than peat-moss-cemetery-dust; they stay too wet, they suffocate, and they lack soul.

Enter Elvira’s Tropical Blend. This isn't just dirt; it’s an ecosystem in a bag. We’ve handcrafted this mix with a "haunting" amount of detail: chunky lava rock for skeletal structure, premium orchid bark for air, and a heavy dose of our signature biochar to house the microbes your plants crave. One of our favorite "spooky sisters" over in Labette County told us her Monstera grew a leaf the size of a tombstone after just one month in this blend. It’s airy, it’s rich, and it’s unapologetically premium. Give your jungle the foundation it deserves before the summer swelter sets in.

Your home is your sanctuary, even if it looks a bit like a Victorian conservatory. Show us your "indoor jungle" in the comments! We want to see those lush, dark leaves reaching for the light.

They rise from the soil like tiny, annoying ghosts. Fungus gnats aren't just a nuisance; their larvae are throwing a silent banquet on your plant’s root hairs. If your home has become a haunted house of tiny flies, it’s likely your soil is staying too damp. The fix? A top-dressing of John’s First Kill. It creates a dry, jagged barrier that the gnats can't pe*****te to lay their eggs. Science: 1. Ghosts: 0.

Have you ever lost a plant to an "uninvited guest"? What’s your best (or weirdest) pest control secret?

Every time you spend a dollar at a big-box store, a little bit of a small town’s heartbeat slows down. Supporting local businesses is a political act—it’s a vote for a world that isn't colonized by corporate logos. We choose the "unconventional" path, and we are so grateful you choose to walk it with us.

Shout out your favorite local Independence (or SEKS) small business in the comments! Let’s spread the love.

Today, the air is heavy with memory. We honor those who gave everything so we could plant our gardens in peace. Remembrance is a lot like a perennial; it returns every year, sometimes painful, but always a testament to a life that mattered. If you’re visiting a cemetery today or just sitting in your own "Legacy Garden," know that your grief is just another form of love that refused to die.

Is there a specific flower or scent that always reminds you of a loved one who has passed?

What is everyone doing for Memorial Day Weekend?
One of my earliest memories was when my family, aunts, uncles, cousins, would have a picnic at Big Hill (not too far from the Bender's homestead), and spend the afternoon fishing, grilling, and enjoying the great outdoors!

Is your indoor jungle looking a bit crisp around the edges? The Kansas wind is notorious for stealing humidity, leaving your tropicals looking like parched relics. If you aren't ready for a full Mayan Bioactive Paludarium, you can still steal its secrets. Grouping your plants creates a "mini-forest" microclimate. For those truly struggling, a layer of our Lava Rock or LECA in a tray with a bit of water creates an evaporation station that would make a rainforest gecko feel right at home.

Which of your plants is the biggest "drama queen" when the humidity drops? Post a photo of your most finicky tropical!

In our corner of Kansas, water isn't just a resource; it’s a shared bloodline. As we see more corporate interests vying for groundwater rights, we have to remember that a community is only as strong as its most vulnerable well. We advocate for sustainable water management that prioritizes our local families and small-scale farmers over massive industrial drain. At The Bender, we believe in a future where the tap never runs dry for the people who actually tend the earth.

Do you use a rain barrel or greywater system? Let’s share tips on how we’re all conserving our most precious element this season.
