An ecoMemorial is a mangrove seedling planted using the patented REM Reforestation System in which the cremains or cremation ashes of an individual become the medium for germination and long-term development of a mangrove tree. During the development process the cremains are assimilated as the seedling is nurtured into a reproductively mature coastal hardwood. Each ecoMemorial tree is a contributor in a larger scale coastal reforestation or environmental restoration project. Our sustainable method of ecological burial provides an approach with sound principles for supporting nutrient recycling functions through the living organism of a reproductively mature mangrove. The tree naturally produces seeds on an annual basis, which disperse living extension of the original planting across the entire ecosystem. The ecoMemorial tree becomes an extension of the individual person and symbol of ongoing life. For those who have previously passed and cremains are no longer available, an ecoMemorial mangrove can be planted in remembrance and commemoration of a loved one. The person is included in our database along with the associated GPS location of their ecoMemorial tree. With or without cremains an ecoMemorial tree can be dedicated to creating critical habitat, protecting coral reefs and solving some of today’s most pervasive environmental problems.
