Myth: Thermostat placement doesn't really matter.

Fact: It matters a lot. A thermostat in the wrong spot can throw your entire system out of sync.

If it's mounted near a sunny window, a kitchen, a hallway, or a supply vent, it reads the wrong temperature. The result is uneven cooling, higher bills, and a system that cycles on and off at all the wrong times.

The ideal spot is an interior wall, in a commonly used room, away from direct sun, vents, and heat sources.

Refrigerant circulates in a closed loop, so if yours is low, there's a leak somewhere in the system. Signs to watch for:

• Cooling that just isn't keeping up
• Hissing or bubbling sounds from the indoor or outdoor unit
• Ice forming on the copper lines or evaporator coil
• Higher energy bills with no change in how you're using the system

FAQ: My AC is blowing warm air. What's going on?

A few common causes to check first:

• Thermostat set to fan-on mode instead of auto cooling
• Dirty air filter restricting airflow
• Low refrigerant (often a sign of a leak somewhere in the system)
• Frozen evaporator coil from low refrigerant or poor airflow
