Curious? Indeed. This rare French print was made by the famous illustrator Gustav Dore in 1868 to accompany the volumes of Fables de la Fontaine. It tells the tale of Ulysses’ friends preferring their animal state to the reason of humans. Similar to Aesop’s fables, Fountaine collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. These alluring tales are still taught and revered by French children and adults today. $175 plus shipping

Sourcing for French antiques in three regions tends to lend itself to a final stop in Antibes before departing from Marseille. And international flights to Nice are also a nice option. Items will arrive late June, early July. antiques

Sourcing is more than a full day’s work, both delightful and determinedly diligent. I continue training my eye for items for my suitcase and those that will be shipped via ocean crate. Each piece must be something I have fallen in love with, is authentic (watch for vintage replicas) a patina, storied and from a vendor who truly has a love for what they do. The pieces carry their energy as well as that of their past. The shipper I chose also must carry a love and respect for what the carefully package, send, and for their time honored link to the terroir and stories of the towns and vendors they serve. antiques

Sourcing in the sunshine in Nice. It’s hard to find a more perfect day. It’s a lovely venue with beautiful pieces, and prices reflect that higher end essence of the Côte d’Azur. Waiting until the end of the day provides a bit more opportunity for negotiation.

My wonderful stay in Uzès, included an impromptu and lively artist reception for French artist . Special thanks to the staff and owner of the hotel who made my weeklong stay here so relaxing and my home away from home during my Spring sourcing tour. Special thanks to Olivia, Virginia, Amad and all the others who create a beutiful place of service and quiet luxury in Provence. And, to Christine for her poetic and engulfing paintings! I was so happy to purchase one and it’s headed home.
