Curious? Indeed. This rare French print was made by the famous illustrator Gustav Dore in 1868 to accompany the volumes of Fables de la Fontaine. It tells the tale of Ulysses’ friends preferring their animal state to the reason of humans. Similar to Aesop’s fables, Fountaine collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. These alluring tales are still taught and revered by French children and adults today. $175 plus shipping
