🧏‍♀️Have you heard of Chelsea chopping?
I didn’t know until a few years ago that there was a specific term for it, but it’s something that I’ve always done with later blooming perennials…

✅it’s an easy method to tidy up the look of a perennial bed especially the front or border.

⏰ Timing is key. You need to do this before the plants set their buds. In our area that typically starts in late May and can be done through the beginning of July depending on the species.

🌸this works for later blooming flowers such as garden phlox, swamp milkw**d, iron w**d, goldenrods, skullcap, asters, +more

✂️you can cut the plant by 1/3 to 1/2 to manipulate the height plus the bloom. This will extend the season of blooming in your garden for your enjoyment and pollinator benefit.

😥 Don’t be nervous! You can experiment with this technique..think about plants that have a tendency to flop over in your garden. Instead of dealing with the flop or adding stakes, try cutting them back by half and just see what happens!

👩‍🌾when you get more confident, then you can start adding in doing this over a period of weeks and at different heights. It’s a little bit of artistry in the garden.
