Every sailor knows, at least somewhere in the back of their mind, that every passage eventually comes to an end. There will be a final sail, a final night at anchor, a final quiet watch beneath the stars. We don't get to know when that last sunset is going to arrive, which is exactly why the ordinary ones deserve so much more attention.
It’s easy to spend life waiting for the perfect conditions: the bigger boat, the longer vacation, the retirement date, the better weather, the next season. But the ocean has a way of reminding you that there is no guarantee that “someday” will arrive exactly as planned. Sometimes the most important thing is simply being present for the day you actually have.
So enjoy the coffee in the cockpit. Take the longer route. Stay for the sunset. Swim off the stern. Laugh with your friends. Fix the boat, then go sailing anyway. The memories we keep aren't usually the things we bought or the chores we completed—they're the moments when we stopped and realized how lucky we were to be there.
