I noticed this last week in a pine tree and wanted to share some insight. The combination of fading needles, accumulated frass (sawdust) at the base, and dense pitch tubes means this pine tree has a severe, active bark beetle infestation. This tree is actively dying. When beetles successfully tunnel through the bark, they chew up the cambium layer. That is the tree's pipeline for water and nutrients which is vital for its health and survival. As the needles fade to the yellowish or rust red color indicates the tree's internal circulation system has completely collapsed.
