🏆 Merit Award | Laurel-Jones County Visitor Center

The 2024 AIA Mississippi Design Awards recognized this thoughtful renovation in Laurel, Mississippi. Originally part of Mississippi's first low-income housing development, this building has been sensitively repurposed as a visitor center while honoring its historical significance. The jury praised the creative adaptive reuse — incorporating existing construction materials in new ways to meet modern needs — and commended the approach for maintaining the building's legacy while making it a valuable new community asset.

🏆 Honor Award + Samuel Mockbee Award + People's Choice | Fowl River Cabin

The 2023 AIA Mississippi Design Awards gave this remarkable residential project a rare triple recognition — the Honor Award, the Samuel Mockbee Membership Award, and the People's Choice Award. The jury called it an exemplary residential work, praising the juxtaposition of forms that show deep respect for the site and environment. The choice of vernacular materials and colors allows the landscape to shine throughout, and the expressed regionalism was described as authentically and beautifully Mississippi.

Flashback to 2022! ⏰ Wier Boerner Allin Architecture's Capri Theater, Highball Lanes, and The Pearl earned the People's Choice Award in 2022. Entertainment design that brings communities together!

The historic Capri Theater, which stands as the centerpiece of Fondren's business district, first opened its doors in 1940 as "The Pix." After 45 years of varying commercial success, the Capri (renamed in the mid-1960s) closed its doors and remained dormant for three decades. The original theater building and its neighbors have now been renovated and restored to preserve their historical relevance while reimagining the buildings' interiors to accommodate a modern civic entertainment hub. The design team worked to restore the buildings' exterior facades to their original appearances, all of which contribute to the historic Fondren Business District, and the interiors were transformed to house a 168-seat dine-in theater, The Pearl tiki bar and Highball Lanes bowling alley and restaurant.

🏆 Merit Award | Fondren North 6

The 2020 AIA Mississippi Design Awards honored this multi-family development in Jackson's vibrant Fondren neighborhood. Replacing a dilapidated house on an underutilized corner lot along the N. State Street corridor, the project reflects the artistic spirit of the neighborhood while providing much-needed rental housing. Six 1,000 sq ft attached units are visually broken down in scale to match surrounding buildings — and the jury praised the simplicity of forms, creative use of materials, a striking folded roof, and a corner condition that creates a wonderful urban presence on the street.

AAIA Mississippi Emerging Professionalspartners with Mississippi Children's Museum and NOMA Mississippi to introduce students to architecture in ways that invite them to explore concepts in ways that encourage exploration and fun throughout the year!
