Today’s fun project was recovering the beauty and appeal of the front entryway to this home. Previously planted in the space were some Vinca that failed to grow due to the fact that his garden bed receives little to no sunlight throughout the day. We chose some Stromanthe (tri color gonger) for this area today because it thrives in shaded locations and brings a beautiful pop of color to the front door space. We also added two more dwarf Podocarpus to wrap around the corner of the garden bed and continue the small hedge line. Putting the right plant in the right place makes this front entryway so much more appealing, don’t you think?

The papayas are finally starting to bloom and set fruit! We planted these back in March and have been waiting patiently all season long, feeding them with an organic fish emulsion fertilizer, which they seem to love.

To successfully grow papayas, you have to have both a male and a female plant. One papaya simply will not do. Papaya is a unisexual plant and male and female flowers are separate. Hence, self -pollination is not possible. Papaya pollinators have to visit male flowers, collect pollen, then visit female flowers to ensure pollination, and fruit set.

Nobody likes being lonely, even plants need friends. We installed this Blue Agave in a smaller matching planter next to our previously installed Kumquat and Lime Coral Sedum planter. This addition added some new life, color, and textures to this Entryway Planting.

Check out this Front Entry Kumquat Citrus Planter, paired with some Lime Coral Sedum at the base that will cascade down the front of the planter, all setup with an automatic irrigation system.

We love getting the opportunity to set up planters for clients. A single planting in a select location can really brighten up and bring attention to an underappreciated area. We installed this multicolored planter with a Calamansi cocktail citrus! This is a must have for any home that wants a quick hit of citrus flavor on meals or in drinks.

Passionfruit! if you’re lucky enough for your passion flowers to get pollinated on the single day they are open, you may get a few fruit on your passion flower vine this summer! The fruit tastes just like the ice cream flavor 😛. Not only are the passion flowers themselves just stunning, but the passion flower vine is an extremely important host plant for the Gulf Fritillary and Zebra Longwing Butterflies here in North Florida, as well as a host of others.

During the middle of the summertime, one of the crops that is thriving the most here in Florida is sweet potato! This plant is amazing for so many reasons and provides so many benefits. In the warm season when you cannot grow your traditional greens like lettuce and kale anymore, sweet potato greens make a great alternative for your summer salads! Another great plus to having sweet potato in the garden is the immediate and fast growing groundcover that it provides, as it is a Vining plant. This will help keep weeds from taking off in your garden all summer long, while providing you with a delicious summer salad green, and most importantly giving you those sweet tasty tubers to harvest in the fall. 🍠🌿

If you want healthier plants, feed your soil with a routine application of organic native mulch to your garden! As it breaks down, it improves the soils physical structure as well as its nutrient content. Your soil is a microbiome of life and activity. Take care of it, and it will take care of you!
