Angel (one of my apprentices) enjoyed seeing the animals on a neighboring property during a collecting trip yesterday. The Florida heat was brutal while we were digging up old trees but we got it done! We started at 7am and finished potting the trees up around 2am. We have such an awesome bonsai crew!

The bonsai exhibit at the ABS Bonsai in the Blue Ridge event this weekend was varied in styles and included a quantity of stunning trees. One that stood out to me (and the judges) was the bunjin style mimosa, which is a rare species to see in bonsai but does occur in Japan. It took home awards for Best in Show, Best Flowering and People’s Choice.

Thankful to have spent time with the great Bjorn Bjorholm this weekend, his last visit to the U.S. for the foreseeable future. I look forward to working with him in Japan soon. Bjorn’s teaching has been instrumental in my development as a bonsai artist.

Bonsai trees in the permanent bonsai exhibit at the North Carolina Arboretum. This exhibit leans toward the naturalistic aesthetic thanks to curator Arthur Joura. I really enjoyed learning about his bonsai philosophy, which is informed by nature and the history of traditional art going back many centuries.
