It is almost lake season! Some of our favorite projects to work on are those which allow us to collaborate with our clients to create a special place for them to enjoy the natural beauty of our local lakes. We recently worked with a client to reimagine their vacation home on Chautauqua Lake. Our goals were to expand the home's existing footprint to better take advantage of views and indoor/outdoor living, while creating more space for multigenerational gatherings. Our clients, the Bogus family, are very pleased with the outcome, sharing the following testimonial:
"Don provided us with great design ideas and approaches for our lake house. He was with us through the entire process with our contractor and was expert in putting all the parts and pieces together to create a beautiful new floor plan and look. Visitors cannot say enough positive things about how our rooms look and feel …. “beautiful & one of a kind” are common reactions. Thanks again, Don, for helping us realize our wonderful lake house!"

The recent taste of spring has us thinking about days on the lake and this fresh & airy custom modern craftsman vacation home that we completed on Chautauqua Lake last year.
Our clients were thrilled with the design process and the final product, sharing the feedback that "Don listened and added his insight and knowledge into every conversation in a professional way. In many aspects, chatting with Don almost felt like conversations with a family member. You could tell he cared and would give thoughtful responses, suggestions, and solutions. Plus, Don simply had a calmness about him which put us at ease knowing we could be confident he would help from start to finish to work through the issues, concerns, and changes that inevitably happen with all new builds. He indeed did provide that grounding that we needed throughout many phases of the process and kept us at ease. We are grateful for the team at Harrington Architecture for helping us create an amazing home that we will enjoy for generations to come."

Work in Progress: We have had the unique opportunity to work with a client to pay homage and rebuild after their beloved historic home was destroyed by fire. The original 1920s era home was designed by prominent local architects Beck & Tinkham in the Tudor Cottage style, dripping with whimsy and storybook details. Our clients desired to build back an updated and expanded home on the same lakefront site, with many of the same historic features and fairy tale feel of the original.
Architect Don Harrington had previously worked with the clients several years earlier to create 2 additions to the original home, preserving the existing historic details and designing the new additions to be compatible and harmonious with the Tudor Cottage style. The clients were quite pleased with the results of those projects, so they again called upon Harrington Architecture when it was time to rebuild after the loss of the original home.
Our goal was not to duplicate the Beck & Tinkham design exactly, but to approach the project with respect and to honor the spirit of the original home.
We are excited to share a photograph of the original historic home which served as our inspiration, along with some process images of the new design. The project is currently under construction and we can't wait to share updates as our design comes to life!

We had the privilege of working with some very special clients to transform their property from a cramped, dated mid century rambler into a modern and bright three-story residence, highlighting its rare wooded lot on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution. Abundant windows and multilevel decks and patios showcase property's trees, providing shade and privacy during the summer and a beautiful, light-filtered view during the changing seasons. The home's main living area features a retractable wall, resulting in a wonderfully flexible floorplan. The versatility of the space is as well suited for study and intimate conversations as it is for entertaining and musical performances. We were also able to create a separate apartment on the lower level, perfect for hosting guests or extra income potential. It was a pleasure collaborating with Alexander Construction Inc. to bring this project to life.

In the words of our clients, "It began with a long conversation during which Don really listened to what we wanted our new home to be. He made our vision come alive, and together with the skillful craftsmen of Alexander Construction, vision became reality. We appreciate the ease of communication we had with Don, and all the ways that Harrington Architecture made this process more enjoyable."

As we head into fall and the crisp autumn breeze starts to blow, we are daydreaming about our recent modern farmhouse project. We are proud to have collaborated with Mitchener Builders to achieve this juxtaposition of clean, modern lines with warm, rustic details. Where better to enjoy the beautiful view of the changing leaves, than cozied up in front of this dramatic stone fireplace?

Today we are celebrating the 25 year anniversary of one of Architect Don Harrington’s favorite projects, the iconic Packard Manor in Chautauqua Institution!

Completed in 1999, the project was undertaken in response to the client’s desire to rescue the circa 1915 Jacobean revival style mansion, built and owned by co-founder of the Packard Motor Company, William Doud Packard, and his wife Katherine. The original house was designed by famed NYC firm Warren and Wetmore, architect for many important buildings throughout North America, most notably New York City’s Grand Central Terminal.
The goal of the project was to restore its original grandeur while expanding and renovating its living space to accommodate more modern amenities, all within a short time frame of 12 months from design through occupancy. New additions (kitchen, dining areas, staff quarters, indoor spa with custom glass mosaic, outdoor kitchen and garage) were designed to be historically compatible with the original building. Existing ornate plaster, stone and wood detailing was restored and matching details created. New landscaping, including an iron gate and fountain, recreated a stately approach to the manor house. Additionally, a grand staircase extending down the terraced lawn provided easier access as well as a formal approach to the lake.
After twelve months of intense work, the environment created was one of a formal English country estate. Walking through the house, one experiences the grand antiques, gilded moldings, spacious bathrooms, dramatic lake views, and physical comfort with little visual awareness of the modern features that were added to bring the home into the 21st Century.

Local contractor G.L. Olson was instrumental to the success of the project. The 1999 Packard Manor project received a First Award, Residential from Buffalo/Western New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 2001.

This client needed more space in her cramped and outdated kitchen. We expanded the footprint of the space with an addition which allowed us to reorganize the space making it more functional while enhancing the incredible views of Lake Erie.

This was a neat little project in Bemus Point, NY. The details played a big role in this one, from upturned roof ridges to the stucco exterior wall finish. The client wanted an addition designed for their existing historic garage that looked like it had always been there, and that's what we did.

Here are some pictures of our project in Lakewood, NY at Sacred Heart Church that wrapped up this past Summer. We added a new vestibule that tied in with the existing architecture of the church and regraded the exterior which included heated walkways for those snowy days. The outdated windows above the choir loft were also replaced with an energy efficient double pane low-e system.
