Currently digging the shop out of 2 feet of snow.

Started thawing this frozen PVC drain…
Ice babies just kept coming out 😂🧊

Here’s the real issue:

Water expands when it freezes.
PVC doesn’t.

When that pipe fills and freezes solid, the expansion can crack the pipe or split the joints.

Now you’re not just dealing with ice…
You’re dealing with a broken drainage system.

Clear drains before winter does it for you

I remember as a kid we used to play a game called “roof it.”
You’d throw anything you could find onto a roof just to see if it stayed. Balls, bottles, sticks or even someone's shoe.
Fast forward… now I’m a roofer clearing ice dams and pulling perfectly gutter-sized ice balls out of drains 😅
Drains blocked and suddenly water has nowhere to go so it backs up into the roof or overflow effecting windows,siding and even foundations. Wether it be ice damming or the ball drains are the heart of a roof system
Funny as a kid. Expensive as a homeowner

Hot damn… that’s an ice dam ❄️

What you’re seeing here is ice buildup inside the leader pipe — blocking drainage and forcing water to back up where it shouldn’t.

Snow + heat loss + refreeze = trapped water and potential interior damage.

James explains what causes this and why ignoring it can get expensive fast.

Low-slope roofs live or die by one detail: drainage.

You can have the best materials in the world, but if water has nowhere to go, the roof will fail. Period.

When you're getting bids for roofing work always ensure what the drainage plan is.

Our friend Josie is a filmmaker and her next film is a dramedy feature called ‘You really tried your hardest’ about a couple who goes through a miscarriage and what that experience looks like for them. She wrote it after she experienced her own miscarriage and realized that there were just no films about this, so she decided to write it herself. The whole thing will be filmed in Downtown JC!
