Late Bloomer Farm

Late Bloomer Farm Late Bloomer Farm & Rabbitry is a small urban farm project. We are intent on using as much of our 1/ We have currently updated our goals..

Late Bloomer Farm & Rabbitry is a small urban farm project started by Seth and Kathy Croteau. We have approximately 1/10 of an acre of land which we are attempting to use to it's fullest capacity for the production of berries, vegetables and meat. We grew up in rural areas and had vegetable gardens when we were growing up, Seth also had experience with raising and processing rabbits. After a numbe

r of years working many hours and raising three children we decided it would be nice to raise some fresh vegetables once again. We started out with container gardening on our patio, growing lettuce, herbs and a patio tomato. This quickly led to a desire to expand our fresh food options. During this time we watched the documentary Food Inc and immediately became concerned about the effects of GMOs( genetically modified organism) on our health. We then decided to turn as much of our lawn into vegetable and berry producing gardens as we could and we have accomplished a great deal of this goal. Additionally we decided that since there was a fresh and healthy meat option available to us with raising rabbits we added this to our farm plans. We hope to have a bee hive and other small productions in the future and eventually move to a more rural area where we can operate a full time rabbitry, along with other farm animals to supplement our food sources. our honey bee operations have become successful enough to operate a new business venture. We will now be producing more honey and bee products ..we would appreciate your support in our new venture. In keeping with our new venture we have renamed our farm to become Late Bloomer Farm & Apiaries.

The cool May weather has slowed the garden growth but things are growing anyway. The radishes are finally getting bigger, the potatoes will need to be hilled up this weekend, the lettuce is growing like w**ds and the strawberries look great.

I had a chance to do some fishing yesterday and was able to add a few more fish to our trout collection in the freezer.

It's been a cool stretch of weather and everything is taking longer to grow. The good thing is things are growing. We have tomatoes in, snow peas are climbing the trellis, radishes are coming along slowly and the potatoes are almost all up. We could use some warm weather.

It's cooler than it should be for this time of year but the blueberry bushes look great and are loaded with blossoms.

It's been 10 days since I put in carrot and radish seeds. The weather has been cooler than normal but the radish seeds have started growing and we should have radishes to pick in three weeks or so.

Part of farming is gathering what food you can. Today I caught this beauty after a seven year fishing hiatus. Needless to say it went in the freezer for a future fish fry.

Planting has officially started on the farm. We have chard, spinach and a few varieties of lettuce planted in our cold frame raised bed and some galvanized buckets. I removed the w**d block from the lower garden and dug two furrows to plant our seed potatoes in. Here we go.

Yesterday that last of our honeybee colonies were taken from our Stone Hill Apiary. Beekeeping and honey production has been an interesting, rewarding and very difficult part of our farm to maintain and manage. I'm looking forward to spending more time in the gardens and some time in the back brooks doing some fishing. Thank you for all of our followers, friends who supported us.

I have always judged my beekeeping abilities by the number of colonies that made it through our New England winter. Although we're leaving beekeeping it looks like we'll have a nice group of tough overwintered colonies to sell in spring.
