How hot is TOO hot for plants? Our experts weigh in on what to look for when plants are in heat stress:
1. Are the leaves wilting? Water evaporates into the atmosphere more quickly in high heat, draining a plant’s reserves. This is especially true in dry heat.
2. Flowers, especially young blossoms, drop. Some plants need to forfeit their reproductive goals in order to use their available energy to manage their own cooling systems. Heat waves can mean fewer flowers.
3. They stop breathing to prevent water loss. Harder to see, but some plants will close their leaf pores (stomata) to keep water from evaporating. This comes at a high price, as the pores must remain open to take up carbon dioxide, which is critical to photosynthesis. Plants with limited CO2 are slower to grow and may attract pests due to a weakened immune system.
So what should you do??
1. Water and Mulch. Whenever it's over 90, be sure to give your plants plenty of water. This will prevent wilt and give them the freedom to manage their internal systems without worrying about losing too much moisture. By mulching your plants early on (and refreshing the mulch 1-2 times throughout the season) you'll help to keep the surrounding soil cool and limit water loss.
2. Build healthy soil. Good soils mean more water-holding capacity and less evaporation. Perennial plants are best-positioned to survive extreme temps when their roots run deep and wide and healthy soils make this type of self-care possible.
3. Plant Defensively. Create some shade, especially from afternoon sun. This may mean planting a large shrub, bush, or structure on the western side of your favorite perennials, or it may mean intentionally revamping a large area, making it a Shade Garden. With the ability to lower temps in your yard by fifteen degrees, you and your plants will appreciate a shady retreat.

Its going to be a heat wave! 5 tips from the pros on saving your landscape during extreme heat.
#1: Water early. Get outside and irrigate your lawn and garden before the temperatures reach their peak. This will give roots time to absorb the moisture and help prevent heat stress in flourishing foliage.
#2: Apply mulch. Excessive heat dehydrates your landscape more quickly. Add mulch to help preserve moisture from those early-morning watering sessions.
#3: Hand water as needed. For those long summer days, use a sprayer or watering can to mist plants, shrubs and bushes that begin to wilt and wither.
#4: Keep grass on your lawn higher than usual. Longer blades of grass act as a shield for your soil. This will protect it from the harsh sun rays and help it retain more moisture. Three to six inches is the recommended height during a heat wave. When you do mow the grass, leave the clippings on the lawn for a bit of natural mulch.
#5: Add shade cloth. Shade cloths are made of breathable materials that facilitate airflow to keep temperatures underneath cool and comfortable. Many are also designed to filter harmful UV rays so your plants and crops have a chance to thrive during periods of prolonged heat.

Its almost Summer and when the rain finally stops you will feel the need to water your lawn. In this 4 part series we will talk about watering tips for more efficient watering all summer long.

Part 4. Watering Different types of lawns:
During the first year of your lawn’s growth, whether it's a newly seeded, sodded, sprigged, or plugged lawn, don't rely solely on Mother Nature to do the watering. Additional irrigation should always be provided.

When watering a newly seeded lawn, the key is to keep the top inch of soil consistently moist but not soggy. You will likely need to mist the seeded area once or twice a day (possibly more if it’s hot and dry outside). Once the seeds start to germinate, continue to keep the top 2 inches of soil moist until the new grass reaches a mowing height of around 3 inches. After that, begin to cut back watering to twice per week and soak the soil deeper, about 6 to 8 inches, to encourage the grass roots to grow down deep into the soil.

Keep These Tips in Mind When Watering a Cool-Season Grass Type:
Tall fescue has a deep root system and the highest drought tolerance of all the cool-season grass types.
Lawns that are a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescues will go dormant during drought if not watered, but will revive (re-green) when rain returns.

When Watering a Warm-Season Grass Type, Keep These Tips in Mind:
In general, warm-season grass types require less water than cool-season grasses. Where you live determines how frequently you need to water because of differences in rainfall and summer weather conditions. Clay soil holds water longer and can be watered less frequently than sandy soil, which drains very quickly (and therefore needs to be watered more often).

You can set out a hose attached to a sprinkler and set a timer once you know exactly how long it takes to achieve your watering goals, or CALL US! We can install an irrigation system which is set for the right amount of time you need and the amount of days you need to water. You never have to worry if you will have time to water the lawn again!

Part 3. How to tell if you have watered enough:
Check the Soil
To see how long it will take to soak the soil, check it every 15 minutes during your first watering by using a screwdriver to test how deep the water has moved. Mark the time once the soil has been soaked to a depth of at least 6 inches—that’s how long you’ll need to water your lawn each time in the future. Short on time and simply want to know if you can skip watering for the day? Use this rule of thumb: If you can't easily stick that screwdriver 6 inches deep into the soil, you need to water.
Measure with Cans
Place clean, empty tuna cans in different spots around the lawn and measure how long it takes to collect 1 to 1.5 inches of water in each can. Since sprinkler coverage patterns may vary throughout the lawn, use the average time it takes to fill all of the cans.

Part 1. Know when to water your lawn:
If you find your lawn has taken on a grayish cast or appears to be dull green, it’s telling you that it needs water. You can also check your lawn by walking on it: If your footprints don’t disappear quickly, it’s because the grass blades don’t have the needed moisture to spring back. While it may seem like you can head out to water your lawn anytime during the day, your lawn actually needs more specific care. Watering in the morning (before 10 a.m.) is the best time for your lawn; it’s cooler and winds tend to be calmer so water can soak into the soil and be absorbed by the grass roots before it can evaporate. If you must water in the evening, try between 4 and 6 p.m. which should give the grass blades time to dry before nightfall. The later you water, the greater chance of disease becoming prevalent in your lawn.

5 Ways to fix a Muddy Yard & Say Goodbye to Dirty Paw Prints!
If you have mud in your yard and dogs, then you also have muddy dogs, which leave their dirty paw prints everywhere. There is no doubt, dogs take great pleasure in sinking their paws into the wet, spongy dirt where grass once grew.
In this 5 part series we will discuss how to make both you and your pup happy to be outside!
5. Cedar Hog Fuel Dog Run
Cedar hog fuel is a fibrous bark sometimes referred to as Gorilla Hair. It is most often used for mud control, on pathways, in animal kennels, on playgrounds, and as ground cover. As the name suggests, cedar hog fuel is made from 100% cedar leftover from cedar shakes and shingles that is run through a “hogger” then ground up.
If you are considering cedar ground fuel, be sure to only use untreated product. Some products are toxic to animals and people because they are made from wood that is treated with chemicals to help the wood break down, burn, or with recycled pallet boards.
Not sure what to do? Call Us! Our team of experts makes this look easy. We can have your pup mud free in no time!

4. Pine Flakes Dog Run
Pine flakes are another product that can be used to cover up a muddy yard. Not only do they make a great ground cover, but they also help dry out the yard and protect the soil. Pine flakes don’t require any fancy installation and are eco-friendly.
Pine flakes originate from pine trees and often what you see baby chicks standing in at the zoo or pet store. They come in many sizes such as extra-large, big, medium-fine, and various shapes and sizes. Among them, medium pine flakes are said to work well.
Pine flakes work best to cover temporary problems, caused by rain, etc. Since they absorb and hold moisture, they need to be replaced if they never dry out. If you have a drainage problem, your best bet is to fix the problem then apply the pine flakes as needed, seasonally.
