Week 1: Design Product Selections
Does your design/remodeling/specialty firm state their contract provides a product allowance then refers you to suppliers without the need to personally be there to assist you or manage the process? If yes, walk - walk away quickly. You are asking for project nightmares.
Successful firms go above and beyond the traditional remodeling company by personally assisting with the selection of countertop materials, appliances, fixtures, lighting, flooring and most other related kitchen and bathroom esthetics. I personally meet with my clients at the suppliers to review options in paint colors, tiles, and most other required items. I then customize the design plan around these personal selections so my clients are able to visualize how the items work within their space. This visualization helps to assure the integrity of a project and avoids costly design choice mistakes. I order products after the client's decision is finalized and we both agree these items function properly and conform to the design theme.
I personally don't understand how a successful company remains in business, let alone maintains outstanding references, with the business practice of selection delegation without supervision. This format and lack of attention to detail, while not ever acceptable to me, may have worked in yesteryear when market was flooded with clients and not enough firms to handle the requests. However, with the numerous options available to clients today, these firm’s business practices are outdated and destined to fail.
Please don't make the mistake of selecting a firm that offers only allowance options and take or leave it design plans. Retain the firm or designer who offers personalized attention, true design options, tailors the design to your specifications and requirements and the firm who offers assistance with related product selections.
