No fancy sprayers. No lightweight ladders. No paint-matching apps. Just hard work, steady hands, and a whole lot of skill.

Back in 1926, painters mixed many of their own paints by hand, worked with heavy oil-based coatings, and spent long days on wood ladders with brushes that had to be cleaned and cared for like tools of the trade. Prep work was everything — scraping, sanding, patching, and patience.

Exterior painting meant battling the weather with little modern equipment, and interior jobs often involved rich wood trim, detailed craftsmanship, and wallpaper removal that was no joke.

Painters back then weren’t just painters — they were craftsmen. Nearly 100 years later, the tools may have changed, but good prep, attention to detail, and pride in the finished product still matter.

Think you could handle being a painter in 1926? 🎨🪜

Pop quiz! You're walking in a green space and you see this precious fawn all alone. What do you do?

If your inclination was to, say "aw🥰🥹" then continue your day, you pass!

It's easy to fall into the baby animal trap this time of year, but wildlife babies are meant to be alone, we promise! They easily go hours without mom so that she can do her own self care and to protect them from being noticed by predators. Some animals, like rabbits, only visit their babies twice a day.

If an animal is truly injured or the mother is obviously deceased, that is when human intervention can take place by calling a wildlife rehabilitator. Find a list of licensed professionals at: www.michigan.gov/dnr/managing-resources/wildlife/keep-wild

Ketchup versus gravy on a pasty is the Upper Peninsula's most enduring and most unresolvable culinary debate, a conflict that has been running since the first pasty came out of a UP oven and someone had to decide what to put on top of it. Both sides are completely convinced. Neither side is backing down. The UP has been this way for over a century and shows no signs of changing.

The gravy camp argues tradition. A rich brown gravy complements the meat and potato filling in a way that feels complete and intentional. It is warm. It is savory. It makes the pasty feel like a full meal that knows what it is.

The ketchup camp argues simplicity and tang. The acidity cuts through the richness of the filling. It is what their grandmother used. It is correct because it has always been correct and no further argument is required.

Yoopers will tell you the real answer is whatever their family did growing up. That answer is non-negotiable and delivered with the confidence of someone who has never seriously entertained the alternative.

The Cornish miners who invented the pasty did not specify a topping. That omission has been causing arguments in the UP for 150 years. It will cause arguments for 150 more. Michigan would not have it any other way.
