A Living Canvas
Unlike static decor, this installation is designed to interact dynamically with its environment.
• The Light Dial: The visual character of the piece shifts according to the time of day.
It responds fluidly to the cool temperatures of natural morning light and the warm glow of evening artificial lighting, revealing different textures and shadows as the sun moves. (The sun came out shortly after we completed the installation and you can see how the light changes the piece).
• Evolutionary Design: This is a piece of art in a temporal sense.
We have intentionally selected a few pieces of moss (in the upper left-hand corner) that feature two specific species of moss.
The less prominent species will lighten over time, drawing the eye to that left-hand corner so the viewer may “read” the piece just as we read text on a page. This subtle change allows the installation to mature and settle into its environment gracefully.
The Science of Dormancy
While industry standards often label these materials as “preserved,” our experience and the botanical reality of the species tell a different story. The moss in this installation is actually in a state of dormancy.
Biological Resilience
Mosses are among the most resilient organisms on Earth. They possess the unique ability to suspend their metabolic processes—a state of dormancy.
Maintenance-Free Longevity
Because the moss is dormant rather than chemically preserved in the traditional sense, it retains its plush, organic texture without the need for life support.
• No Watering: The cellular structure is stable.
• No Misting: Introducing moisture can actually disrupt the intended aesthetic and dormancy.
• Zero Upkeep: The piece remains a vibrant, tactile element of the home without any traditional maintenance.
