Multistudio

Multistudio We are a multidisciplinary design practice that celebrates collaborative possibility.

Since its founding in 1974, the studio has blossomed from a humble vision of two University of Kansas classmates into a socially-engaged design collective pushing the edge of service-based practice. The firm's initial regional focus has spread into a vast root system that spans five studio locations, including Kansas City, New Orleans, Phoenix, and San Francisco. Embedding studios within these cli

mates, geographies, histories, and cultures has energized Multistudio's multifaceted approach to design. Multistudio expands the practice of architecture, brand experience, city design, education design, and interiors to serve our client's and communities needs. Diversity of thought, people, and practice areas enables us to explore place and spark economic, social, and environmental change. And although we take on a variety of projects, neither size nor type dictates their importance.

Dr. Michael Ralph, Multistudio’s Director of Research, is a co-founder of the Coalition for the Advanced Understanding of School Environments (CAUSE), a collaborative organization that offers research-driven insight into how students and teachers engage with learning spaces.

The research generated by CAUSE helps industry leaders in education design advocate for greater investment in K-12 projects and facilities.

Dr. Ralph's goal with CAUSE is to make K-12 post-occupancy evaluations (POEs) more accessible to school communities. Having standardized data to understand the impact of education design helps build stronger consensus around project investments, driving better outcomes for students and teachers.

Multistudio’s office, Align Real Estate, and Turner Construction collaborated to design and construct Chorus ( ), a residential tower and podium structure that actively engages with the city’s art scene at the Market Street Hub. In addition to over 400 residential units, the building houses the City Ballet San Francisco () and expands the neighborhood’s cultural offerings with Chorus Hall ( ), a new 224-seat theater.

Just outside the building, a new public plaza designed by renowned Mexican architect Frida Escobedo () with Fletcher Studio () creates an activated pedestrian realm.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?
A: Cooking and gardening, finding new places to dine and drink with friends, and spending time with my partner and two dogs.

Q: What do you wish your younger self would have known about financial literacy?
A: Unfortunately I had to learn many lessons about managing money the hard way. Lots of trial and error over the years. Thankfully, I'm now in a good place, financially.

Q: Why do you choose to support Junior Achievement and the educational programs we provide?
A: I do think it's important for youth to learn at an early age how money works, how it flows through a community, how to manage your finances, apply for a job, and create and maintain a business.
