There’s something different about celebrating a project you’ve worked on for years with the people who helped make it happen.

This week, we celebrated the grand opening of the Aiden Hotel and the next chapter of Kansas City’s historic 1919 Mutual Building.

Bringing it to life took vision, thoughtful design, creative problem-solving and the right partners at the table. We’re proud to have worked alongside Oak KC LLC and the Meiners family, Neighbor Construction, Level Builders, KCATA and Aiden by Best Western/BWH Hotels to make it possible.

For our team, this is what it's all about, honoring what makes a building worth keeping while finding a viable path for what comes next.

A century of history on the outside. A completely new chapter taking shape inside.

Built in 1922 as the Kansas City Title and Trust Building, 929 Walnut has stood at 10th and Walnut for more than 100 years. Today, we are giving it a new purpose through adaptive reuse, transforming the former downtown office building into loft residences and commercial space while preserving the character that makes it worth saving.

And the exterior is only part of the story.

For more than a century, this building has been part of downtown Kansas City, and preserving that history has been an important part of this project from the beginning.

Our involvement with 929 goes well beyond the role of architect. As architects, developers and owners, we’ve had the opportunity to approach the building from every side, from determining what could be preserved and adapted to creating a residential experience that works for how people live today.

The transformation is significant, but 929 still feels connected to the building that was here long before us. That balance between preserving what gives a property its character and making it viable for the future is a big part of why we believe in adaptive reuse.

We’re proud of what 929 has become and even more excited to see people experience it for themselves.

For us, adaptive reuse has always been about understanding what’s already there, identifying what makes it worth keeping, and finding the right way to move it forward.

Aiden is that philosophy realized.
What was once the historic 1919 Mutual Building has been reimagined as a new hospitality experience in the heart of Kansas City, with the character of the original building still very much part of the story.

A lot can change in a year.

These two photos tell the story of the Aiden Hotel. What began as an active construction site is now a thoughtfully reimagined destination in the heart of downtown Kansas City.

Hunter Farrell has been part of the project from the very beginning, helping bring this adaptive reuse project to life. We can't wait to see the doors officially open on September 8th and celebrate this building's next chapter.
