The research on this is not ambiguous. The built environment we have created has fragmented once interconnected habitats and ecosystems. Migratory insects and wildlife have taken serious hits because of it. But we can begin to fix that.

We can weave these fragmented systems back together through small personal initiatives. Creating even a modest piece of habitat in your own yard is where it starts. A way station, a habitat haven, a place for traveling insects and local wildlife to find food, shelter, and a place to rest along their journey. And on top of all of that, these plantings can be genuinely beautiful at any scale and any design level.

Our Native Plant Boxes are now available through a complete zero-waste planting kit with locally grown regionally native plants and a custom planting design included. And to celebrate the launch, is hosting a native plant sale from May 1st through May 4th. Head to the shop ➡️ store.dtekc.com Follow ➡️ Green Thumb Gardens

Here is what a weekend with the Native Plant Box actually looks like.

Friday. Your box shipped directly to you. You opened it up. Took the plants out. Read through the instruction manual. Gave your little ones some water and set them in the shade until you could get to them the next day.

Saturday morning. You get started. Your box contains a grid that opens all the way up. You take your design out. You read through the plan once. You pick your spot.

You mark out the footprint and dig your edge. Maybe you prepped the turf beforehand. Maybe you did not. Either way the grid tells you where the plants go, one by one. You dig. You follow the instructions so turf cannot get through. You set the biodegradable pot directly in the hole. You do not pull the plant out of anything. The pot goes in the ground whole.

You work through the layout. Each plant has a designated spot. You are not making decisions in the moment. The decisions were already made. You are just following the plan.

A few hours later you are done. What you are looking at is not finished. It is going to look sparse in year one. That is normal. That is fine. Natives establish slowly above ground and fast below it. By year two it fills in. By year three it starts to function the way it was designed to.

You did not need a landscape designer. You did not need a horticulture degree. You needed a plan and the right plants. The box had both.

Sunday. Water your little ones. Enjoy.

The design plan is the thing most people skip and it is the reason most DIY native gardens do not work.

I have watched people buy native plants and put them in the ground with no plan and wonder why it looks wrong after a year. The plants were fine. The design was missing.

A design plan is not complicated. It is just decisions made in the right order before anything goes in the ground. Which species anchor the planting. Which ones fill the middle layer. What holds the ground at the base. Where the bloom sequence starts in spring and where it carries through to fall. How the whole thing looks in December when nothing is flowering.

For me those decisions took years of trial and error to figure out. I wanted an easier way to get clients into real design without the cost of a full landscape plan. What is easier than following a layout made by someone who has already made most of the mistakes.

That is what the design plan in the box is. Years of decisions compressed into a single printed layout. You do not need to have figured any of it out. You follow the plan.

That combination of right plants and a real design is what changes the outcome. One without the other usually falls apart.

If you have been following along this week you already know the problem. We did not sugarcoat it.

Here is what we think fixes it.

A cardboard box. Biodegradable pots. Native plants. The box unfolds into a w**d mat and a planting grid we designed ourselves. Modular. Simple. Something that actually belongs in the ground it goes into.

We started with mailboxes. Most people have one. That small strip of ground does more than people think. We have over 30 designs coming. This is going somewhere.

Right now we need the word to spread. We are on Kickstarter and we need backers. Seasoned landscaper or first time planter. This was built for both.

Repost it. Share it.

I have watched this happen more times than I can count, and it is the exact problem we built the Native Plant Box to solve.

Someone decides they want a native garden. They go to the nursery in late spring or early summer. They walk the benches and buy what looks good that day. What is in bloom. What catches their eye. They bring it home, plant it, and it looks decent for a few weeks.

And then it doesn't look like what they had in their head.

Here's why.

They bought for the bloom, not the plant. That plant was peaking at the nursery. Once the flowers are gone, if there is no interesting foliage, no structure, nothing that carries the planting forward, you are left with a gap. The question most people never ask is what this plant looks like after bloom. Does it hold its form or die back to the ground completely.

They never thought about their conditions. Most people see a plant they love and convince themselves they have a spot that could work. Sun exposure, soil type, and drainage all matter, and skipping that step is one of the fastest ways to lose plants.

They skipped the sedges and grasses. This is the one most people never see coming. Sedges and grasses are not flashy, and nobody goes to a nursery looking for them. But they are the structural backbone of any native planting. They hold the ground between perennials. They move in the wind in a way that reads as natural. They provide texture and coverage through the seasons when the flowering plants are dormant. Without them you do not have a planting. You have a collection of individual plants sitting in mulch with gaps between them.

And without groundcovers knitting the base together, you get bare soil and eventually w**ds because nothing is covering the ground the way a real plant community would.

This is a design problem. Not a plant problem.

The Native Plant Box solves every one of these problems for you. Every box comes with a professionally designed planting layout, plants selected to work together across the full season, and the sedges, grasses, and groundcovers that most people skip.

What if a simple box could give you everything you need to create professionally designed habitats in your own yard?

No guessing which plants to buy. No standing in a nursery hoping you picked the right ones for your region. No figuring out spacing or placement. No hiring a landscape designer. You follow the plan that comes in the box, plant the 15 plants included with it, and end up with something that actually functions as a habitat.

We've watched people try do this on their own for years. The plants they buy were not selected to work together. There is no design. Things end up in the wrong places. Half of what they bought was even native to their region. A season goes by and it looks rough and they do not know why. That is not a green thumb problem. That is an information and access problem.

For the past few years, I had taken a step away from socials. I've had numerous people help post content for me, but it wasn't me. The thing that keeps pulling me back is the push for more resilient ecosystems. That need has never been in more demand than it is right now. So, I'm back. And this time I plan to show all the cobwebs. The trials and tribulation. Not just the cookie cutter version of what we do.

Over the next 20+ days, myself, my business parter Jacob Taylor () and our native plant nursery Green Thumb Gardens () are going to be posting across all three of our accounts. Each of us is going to bring a different angle to the same story. We are going to walk through the problems we keep seeing in this space, the solution we spent a long time building, and a movement we genuinely want you to be a part of.

If you want the full picture, follow all three and . There will be content across all three accounts that does not repeat, so you'll want to check in on all of them as well go.

We've been working behind the scenes on some really cool things we think can help bring nature into every home. More on that very soon.
