Program Description
This program explores the emergence of a new architectural psychology developed in Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, focusing on the Business Response and Recovery Center designed for the Iniciativa Tecnológica Centro Oriental (UNTECO) in Caguas, Puerto Rico by Manuel Bermudez of Manuel Bermudez Arquitecto CSP. Participants will examine how architecture can support resilience, mental wellness, emergency preparedness, and community recovery in post-disaster environments. Through the lens of this project, the session will address the integration of health, safety, and welfare principles into resilient design strategies that respond to climate vulnerability, social infrastructure, and human-centered recovery efforts in Puerto Rico.

This one of a kind tour includes guided access to both the Chahroudi House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as the guest cottage for the later built, Massaro House. Wright was commissioned by the Chahroudi family and asked to build his masterpiece, with no financial restraint. After experiencing some issues with the town, the Chahroudi’s convinced Wright to design the guest cottage, which would be built first, while FLW was alive to approve it, and the main home to be built later. The Massaro House is one of FLW’s only design that was built after his death, on the exact location it was intended for.

This tour is not wheelchair accessible. Petra Island Tours run rain or shine. The boat has a roof and rain poncho’s will be provided in the case of light rain.
