We would like to pass on this information that was sent to us by a Hayward Representative.
During deep freeze conditions it will be imperative that all pumps run while temperatures are below freezing. If you have a controller, it should take over and turn on pumps and rotate between pool and spa mode on its own. If you do not have a controller, you will need to manage this process on your own. This is all great, unless you lose power. If this happens here are just some but not all the helpful tips to reduce freeze damage to your pool equipment. As stated, this will reduce but not guarantee damage to your pipes and equipment.
Loss of power
1. Turn off all breakers to pool equipment.
2. Open air relief on filter, and remove drain plug on bottom of filter.
3. Remove all pump lids and remove drain plugs on bottom of all pumps.
4. Open in line chlorinator let it drain down.
5. Turn off auto fill and make sure feed line is wrapped.
6. Remove drain plug from heater/ heat pump. You may also open both unions as well as an extra layer of protection.
7. Open salt cell to remove any water inside pipe.
8. Open all drain plugs on UV / Ozone systems
9. Remove lids of check valves to keep them from cracking in freezing conditions.
Check with the owner's manuals of your pool equipment for any other tips to help protect your pool equipment during freeze conditions. Remember, equipment manufactures to not cover freeze damage under warranty. Itβs up to you to protect your equipment.
