So, I have been doing a remodel job, and am refinishing the cabinets. They are solid wood and are beautiful cabinets, but the color on them is dated. So I want to share what I needed to do in order to accomplish this transformation. Let me preface it was not easy! (Before and after pictures coming soon!)

Step 1: Remove the doors, removable shelves, and all hardware from the cabinets.

Step 2: Sand down the cabinet surfaces to get a good, clean working surface.

Step 3: Find a clean, dust free room to do the painting and begin with three layers of stain blocking primer. I used Behr products on my project, but there are recommendations for Rustoleum as well, both sold at Home Depot and any hardware store that carries those products. Let the primer thoroughly dry between coats. You may need to sand down any imperfections that occurred during the painting or drying process throughout the steps. Use a very fine grit to avoid damaging the progress you have made. The sanding is really just to ensure your surface is still smooth and lint/dust free. I also use a shop vac or handheld vacuum to remove dust before I start a new layer of paint.

Step 4: Paint the final coat with the Behr i300 series Pro Paint. It will give you the finish that resists chipping and is easy to clean.

Step 5: Reattach hardware and assemble shelves and doors to cabinets.

Cleaning Barn Door Hardware is Essential

Cracks of your barn door hardware become filled with dust and dirt over time and through use, sometimes transferring to the top of your hardware. To prevent this from happening, there are some DO's and DON'T to remember:

DON'T
1. Don't use coarse or old rags. This can cause rust or damage to the protective coating on the metal.

2. Don't use bleaches and mineral acids to clean your flat track barn door hardware. This is too harsh and can cause damage. Use a mild solution instead, such an all-purpose cleaner or dish soap.

DO's
1. Use olive/coconut/grape seed oil on the hardware to help remove streaks. This will also eliminate any squeaky sounds and make it easier to open and close.

2. Use a cloth moistened with white or cider vinegar to clean and polish the flat track barn door hardware. (I learned this along the way!)

3. Use glass cleaning solutions or stainless steel cleaner (my personal favorite) for hardware made of stainless steel.

Throughout the year, it is important to make sure you are caring for your barn doors to ensure that they not only operate correctly, but remain in mint condition! Here are steps for cleaning your barn doors:

1. Wipe the top of the door frames to remove any dust using a soft rag.

2. Use a feather duster or rag to wipe the dust from around the door frame.

3. Every couple of months, wipe the surface of the entire barn door using oil soap and a soft rag. While doing this, make sure to wipe in the direction of the grain.

4. To clean the barn door pulls, use an all-purpose cleaner. Make sure to remove all dirt, then allow it to dry.

5. If your barn door has a glass inset, you can remove dirt and add shine using a glass cleaner.

My new favorite look! Yellow and Gray with WinSoon various hardware options. This pop of color immediately changes the look and feel of the room and takes the focal point to the door leading to the next room...paint color is a personal choice, but light yellow makes me smile. :)
