We’re proud to highlight one of our current projects: accessibility upgrades to the chancel of the historic Unitarian Universalist Church in Peterborough.
Our firm was selected by the Peterborough (NH) UU Church based on our extensive experience with historic buildings, our leadership in complex projects, and our commitment to thoughtful community consensus-building. This project reflects values we share deeply with the Unitarian Universalist Association—creating spaces that are welcoming, affirming, and accessible to people of all abilities.
Originally constructed in 1845, with chancel modifications in the 1880s and 1920s, the building has been made accessible, the chancel has remained largely unchanged—and not fully accessible—for over a century. In partnership with the congregation and their dedicated accessibility task force, we reimagined the chancel to better serve the entire community.
Guided by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, including Preservation Brief 32, this rehabilitation carefully balances preservation with meaningful change. The project lowers the chancel, introduces welcoming steps across its full width, and integrates a carefully designed ramp to provide dignified, equitable access. It also removes the elevated pulpit and railings—elements introduced in the 1920s that created both physical and symbolic barriers.
The result will be a more open, flexible, and inclusive space—one that fosters connection, participation, and a shared sense of community.
We’re honored to help bring this vision to life. The sanctuary and chancel will reopen for services on Easter Sunday.
