📍 The Modern Volunteer Fire Station: Right-Sizing for Safety, Staffing, and Community Support
🗓 Monday, May 18, 2026
🕐 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM

This presentation will focus on how volunteer and combination fire departments can plan and design modern fire stations that support today’s operational, health, and safety needs — while remaining flexible for the future and mindful of community budgets.

Using real-world examples, the session will explore:
• Renovation, expansion, and new construction strategies
• Flexible spaces for evolving staffing models
• Balancing safety goals with operational constraints
• Navigating community support and funding approval

We’re honored to be part of the conversation shaping the future of fire station design and community resilience.

How can a home better connect to its landscape?

Perched above the Connecticut River Valley with sweeping views of Vermont’s Green Mountains, this home had incredible potential—but it wasn’t fully embracing its setting.

Our design reorients the living experience to the view, introducing a sunroom, expanded dining area, and layered decks that frame unobstructed vistas. A redesigned entry and mudroom improve everyday flow, while a new lower-level bedroom adds flexibility for how the home can evolve over time.

Each intervention respects the home’s original character—preserving its scale and sightlines—while creating a stronger, more intentional relationship to the landscape.

The result is a seamless transformation that enhances livability and brings the surrounding environment to the forefront.

What happens when a setback becomes an opportunity?

After a fire destroyed a retail center along Nashua, New Hampshire’s busy Amherst Street, this project became a chance to rethink the site for long-term success—not just rebuild what was there before.

The new 7,500-square-foot building introduces a modern, flexible retail environment designed to support a diverse tenant mix. Five adaptable spaces allow for long-term versatility, while cohesive storefronts create a strong architectural rhythm without sacrificing individual brand identity.

More than a replacement, this project helps reestablish a neighborhood retail destination—enhancing the streetscape and demonstrating the value of thoughtful, everyday commercial design.

How do you approach balancing flexibility and identity in retail environments?

We’re proud to highlight one of our current projects: accessibility upgrades to the chancel of the historic Unitarian Universalist Church in Peterborough.

Our firm was selected by the Peterborough (NH) UU Church based on our extensive experience with historic buildings, our leadership in complex projects, and our commitment to thoughtful community consensus-building. This project reflects values we share deeply with the Unitarian Universalist Association—creating spaces that are welcoming, affirming, and accessible to people of all abilities.

Originally constructed in 1845, with chancel modifications in the 1880s and 1920s, the building has been made accessible, the chancel has remained largely unchanged—and not fully accessible—for over a century. In partnership with the congregation and their dedicated accessibility task force, we reimagined the chancel to better serve the entire community.

Guided by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, including Preservation Brief 32, this rehabilitation carefully balances preservation with meaningful change. The project lowers the chancel, introduces welcoming steps across its full width, and integrates a carefully designed ramp to provide dignified, equitable access. It also removes the elevated pulpit and railings—elements introduced in the 1920s that created both physical and symbolic barriers.

The result will be a more open, flexible, and inclusive space—one that fosters connection, participation, and a shared sense of community.

We’re honored to help bring this vision to life. The sanctuary and chancel will reopen for services on Easter Sunday.

Our work with the Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church is taking a bold step toward inclusion with the chancel rehabilitation project. The plan lowers the chancel floor and removes the elevated pulpit to install ADA-compliant access, allowing clergy, musicians, and congregants to participate with dignity and independence. A continuous, shallow stair replaces the balustrade, improving sightlines and acoustics during worship, lectures, and community events while preserving the building’s historic character. Designed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards, this project demonstrates how preservation and inclusion unite to serve today’s community—fully and equitably.
