How it Began
Gleaux Shop was founded in 2021 as a reprieve from the impact of the global pandemic - physical and emotional burnout from an endless work-from-home imbalance, the constant broadcasting of police involved killings of Black people on social media, and social isolation. In the midst of all of this, Gleaux Shop's founder realized that she needed to focus on what is in her control - her
energy and mindfulness. Our Mission
Inspired by a new sense of empowerment by consciously practicing self-love, Gleaux Shop was born. Gleaux Shop aims to act as a tangible reminder to make practicing self-care and celebrating Blackness (and all your intersectional identities) a daily ritual. You only have one life - you should spend it being your own best friend and surrounded by things that bring you joy. Our Products
INGREDIENTS
All Gleaux Shop candles are made from non-toxic, high-quality ingredients:
- Coconut wax with a small amount of food grade paraffin. The paraffin in our wax is the same paraffin that's used to give chocolate its sheen as it hardens. We use coconut wax because it's the cleanest burning candle wax on the market, which means our candles produce minimal soot and smoke.
- Phthalate-free premium fragrance oils. We don't use fragrance oils with phthalates as common sense - most people avoid them in products they put in or on their body, so we would never use ingredients in our candles that disperse those chemicals into the air.
- Lead-free cotton wicks. ECO-FRIENDLY
- We use biodegradable packing peanuts, recyclable packing paper, and reusable cloth bags in our packaging.
- Our candle containers are reusable and recyclable.
- All candle are poured by hand in small batches to minimize waste and maintain quality.
- When cared for properly, our candles made with coconut wax can last (burn) up to 15% longer than soy candles, and even longer when compared to paraffin candles (the fastest burning wax). I'm Lindsey Douglas, the maker and creative mind behind all Gleaux Shop products. Most days, you can find me working as a Paralegal for a local non-profit, fighting for Louisianans' civil rights with a focus on police misconduct. While my job is incredibly rewarding, it also takes a huge amount of emotional labor. In seeking restoration, Gleaux Shop was born. Making empowering candles is important to me because as a queer, black woman, navigating my identities has been a huge part of my life. When I was young, it was the source of bullying and anxiety, but as an adult, after having done a lot of self-work and soul searching, who I am is one of my greatest prides. Candlemaking is a restorative for me, and as such, I was inspired to make candles reminding others to take care of themselves, honor and celebrate their identities. It is my honor to share my creations with you, while adding some comfort and joy to your space.
