Good news: we can do that math for you! 🤓
1️⃣ Start with understanding the type(s) of outdoor space you need:
-Covered patio
-Uncovered patio
-Deck (second level, covered or uncovered...and remember, if you have a walkout basement, any patios on the main level will be decks!)
2️⃣ Now review standard depths for various areas of your exterior:
-Covered stoop/small entry: 6-8' deep
-Wraparound or standard patio: 10-12' deep
-Hot tub pad: 9-10' deep
-Entertainment space: 12-15'+ deep
-Balcony/Deck: 6-10' deep
3️⃣ Use "people-math" for how many people will be using the patio most often:
-Seated: 10-12 sq ft per person
-Standing/Mingling: 15-20 sq ft
***If you regularly host, size up, if not, don't over build.
4️⃣ Plan for furniture:
- 6 seat dining table and chairs: 120-150 sq ft
-Outdoor sectional and coffee table: 120-160 sq ft
-Firepit area and seating: 150-200 sq ft
-Grill, prep, and clearance: 40-60 sq ft
***Add 30" minimum walking clearance around everything
5️⃣ One big zone, or multiple defined spaces?
-Bigger continuous spaces can be more usable
-Zones can feel cozier, add privacy, and easier to decorate
6️⃣ Consider other factors:
-Covered spaces average 3x more use as uncovered
-Patio adjacent to a large slider or french doors can feel bigger and make your house feel more open
-Poor connections limit usability (far from a door, kitchen etc)
-Always always always consider the path of the sun/weather
