MOVING ONE OF RALEIGH’S OLDEST HOUSES: The Crabtree Jones House It’s not every day you see a colonial 1700s house being carried on the back of a truck.

For over 200 years, the Crabtree Jones house sat on Wake Forest Road — but it was so far back, hidden behind decades of growth, that it was hard to see it.

Built in 1795, it is one of the oldest houses in Raleigh. Only a handful of historic homes can claim to have been contemporaries and neighbors.

After centuries of watching Raleigh grow and change around it, the city’s developers finally caught up to it. Around 10 years ago, it was loaded onto a truck and moved to make room for apartments — something Nathaniel ‘Crabtree’ Jones could have never imagined when he first built it.

Unlike most other historic houses from that time period, it’s still being used as a residential home. Many of its contemporary neighbors — like the Joel Lane or Mordecai House — are now being used as museums.

We have resumed work in Mt. Blanchard to complete the Log Cabin construction. Our current tasks include building windows and trimming the exterior window frames. The lower windows have been installed. Next, we will run electric wiring prior to chinking the interior, and we will also add period-correct door locks with skeleton keys. Thanks for looking and Have a Good one!
