WOOD STOVE SAFETY TIPS
• Have fireplace/wood stove inspected and cleaned annually by a professional.
• Keep combustibles, such as furniture, curtains, newspapers, etc. at least 36 inches away from the fireplace/wood stove
• Only burn dry, seasoned wood or approved fuels in your fireplace/wood stove. Store your seasoned firewood in a covered, well-ventilated area away from your home to prevent moisture buildup and pest infestation. Keep the woodpile at a safe distance from the house to avoid risk of accidental fires.
• Never use flammable liquids, such as gasoline, kerosene or charcoal starter, to start a fire within your fireplace/wood stove.
• Keep a carbon monoxide detector and a fire extinguisher in the home.
• Be sure your wood stove/fireplace damper is working properly. There should be no debris preventing it from opening and closing.
• Clean out the cold ashes by using a wood stove/fireplace shovel or shop vac and dispose of them outside. NOTE: Coals can remain hot for up to three days, which can become a fire hazard if they come in contact with flammable materials. Put hot ashes in a metal container with a lid, then place the container outside at least 10 feet from your home.
• Circulate the air within the room where your wood stove/fireplace is located to help move the warm air. Ceiling fans should run clockwise on low speeds to redirect the warm from the ceiling into the living space.
