As you prepare for the cold weather coming, make sure you have a heat bulb installed not a LED. Don't forget to remove the plug or plugs on your shallow well pump if you decide to drain your system.

It's time to get your pipes insulated and a heater or heat lamp in your well shed if you haven't already done so. Make sure that you don't put them too close to anything that will catch fire. We've had several people melt their pipes. If you have an air compressor check and make sure the oil isn't too thick. LED bulbs do not give off heat! We've had several pumps to bust in the past because a lot of people do not realize this. I leave my water dripping to keep my pump kicking on periodically. If you have any questions just call.

If your shallow well pump is just humming it is frozen. Turn it off! If you have a SJ10 Goulds that isnt working the switch line is probably frozen. Use a hair dryer to thaw it out.

With this freezing weather coming in, I suggest that you drain your system. Fill coolers, bathtubs, water jugs, etc. Turn off the power. Open a faucet and let all of the water out. Shallow well pumps have a plug or plugs to remove to drain the pump. Goulds pumps have 2 plugs.

If you don't drain your system, make sure the equipment is covered. Install heat lamps, work lights, heaters, etc. LED bulbs do not give off heat! If you have an air compressor make sure the oil isn't thick.

Like so many things these days, there is a shortage on pumps and parts. It will be a lot better to be without water for a few days than to be without for weeks or months. I strongly encourage you to do everything you can to keep your pump from freezing.
