This week we celebrated our little guy turning 18 months old. Life has been a bit busy this past year but figured it’s better late than never to share how this space turned out. (it definitely looks more lived in now) The plan was to be a room that could easily grow with him. All of the wall decor items are some of my favorite finds for the room.

I had given up on that there was anything good on Facebook Marketplace in my area when I came across this gem recently. Brought it in the house last weekend and gave it a good clean. It’s definitely bigger than I was looking for, but it was the style I wanted plus it will have so much space for toy storage once I add more shelves inside!

There has been quite a bit of progress on the carpentry work, staining and painting the past few weeks. The staining and painting is complete and all that remains is for the contractor to come back and finish a few small items. Having construction during the holidays was definitely a challenge (especially with small kids) but we waited a long time for schedules to align that we found ways to make it work and are eagerly waiting to get the house back together.

Checked on the status of the office expansion project construction again and the contractor is making good progress.

Architect tip: If your contract with your client allows, be present and available during construction to support the contractor. This can help catch items early, such as walls that are not framed per the documents, to avoid noting issues during the punch list that are time consuming to correct which could result in delaying occupancy.

Walked the job site today to check on the progress of the office expansion project. Permits were received fairly quickly so the contractor was able to get the demolition and framing work started right away.

Architect tip: If you know the municipality that your project is located in is very “by the book” (which is their right and really their job to be) it can be helpful to call the code official ahead of the permit document submission to respectfully discuss any codes that may be “open to interpretation” because it will help the permit process go smoothly with minimal comments or revisions.

It has been a very busy past 2 months so there hasn’t been a lot of activity on social media lately. A lot of time has been spent finishing up some construction administration work on a car detail shop renovation, finalizing the permit drawings for an office expansion, pulling together the last details of a new nursery and coordinating the start of a new project… all of this while also working as a construction project manager for my full time job and then going out on maternity leave! Hoping to get a few of these items completed before the busyness of the holiday season gets here.
