Corypha umbraculifera
Talipot Palm

This photo was taken in this species native range in Sri Lanka. While this isn’t a completely wild setting, it’s still a great example of seeing a palm where it naturally belongs. Thanks to @டிலன் தென்ப்பூவகம் for sharing this photo of such an incredible species!

One of the things we love most about member contributions is that every photo adds context to a species page — not just what a palm looks like, but where and how people experience it around the world.

Have you seen a palm in habitat while traveling? Or spotted one growing naturally near where you live?

📸 Become a member, upload your photos, and help us build one of the world’s most visual palm species libraries at Project Palm. Every contribution helps tell the story of palms.

🌴 Palm Spotting! 🌴

Thanks so much to David Parker for sharing this great photo after spotting it around his neighborhood.

With its unmistakable bright red crownshaft and tropical appearance, it’s easy to see why this species has become one of the most admired ornamental palms in the world.

One of the coolest things about Project Palm is realizing that incredible palms aren’t only found in botanical gardens or remote habitats… sometimes they’re right around the corner.

📸 If you see a great-looking palm around your town, neighborhood, travels, or even your own garden, please consider taking a minute to photograph it and share it with us. Your photo could help others discover a species they’ve never seen before and help grow our community-powered Species Library.

🌴 Could the future of palm oil come… without palm trees?

A new article featured in our Palms In The News section explores a company in the UK working to produce palm oil through fermentation instead of traditional cultivation.

Palm oil is one of the world’s most widely used ingredients — but new technologies are raising interesting questions about the future of sustainability and agriculture.

This is one of those stories that feels bigger than palms alone.

Sabal mexicana
Texas Sabal Palm

🌴 Wait a minute… if this palm is called the Texas Sabal Palm, why is its scientific name Sabal mexicana? 🤔

This species has one of the more confusing identity stories in the palm world.

Sabal mexicana is native across parts of Mexico, Central America, and reaches into the extreme southern tip of Texas. Because Texas is the only U.S. state where it naturally occurs, it picked up the common name Texas Sabal Palm.

So… is it Mexican? Texan? Central American?

Answer: yes. 😄

No passport required.

This specimen was photographed at Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, Texas — and it’s a great reminder that common names don’t always tell the whole story.

👇 What’s the most confusing common plant name you’ve come across?

Ptychosperma propinquum

This is a slender, solitary palm with an elegant tropical appearance. The palm develops a well-formed green crownshaft that contrasts beautifully against the lighter gray trunk, often becoming more striking as the palm matures. Its crown carries gracefully arching pinnate leaves with neatly arranged leaflets that create a soft, feathery texture.
Although not especially well known in cultivation, this species has tremendous ornamental potential for tropical landscapes and collectors who appreciate elegant understory palms.
Thanks so much to for sharing this wonderful photo with us! All palm photos on our website have been contributed by our members.
