POOL FREEZE ALERT -At Island Vibes Pools we want to provide FREE pool tips for our clients and our neighbors in order to save you from costly damage after the storm.
When a freeze warning is predicted, pool owners in warmer climates should take the following critical steps to protect their pool and equipment from damage:
1. Keep the Water Moving - Moving water is less likely to freeze, which can protect your pipes, pumps, and other pool equipment.
You will need to run the pool pump continuously during the freeze. If you have a variable-speed pump, set it to a higher speed. Ensure water flows through all the pipes, including any water features or fountains.
2. Protect Pool Equipment With Some Coverage - Pool equipment like pumps, filters, and heaters are vulnerable to freezing temperatures, which can cause costly damage. Insulate exposed pipes and equipment with foam covers, towels, or blankets, but be sure to leave room for the pump to have sufficient airflow.
3. Adjust Pool Water Levels and Chemistry - Balanced water chemistry and appropriate water levels prevent ice damage and protect pool surfaces. Ensure the water level is not too high to prevent freeze expansion damage to tiles or coping. Balance the pool's ph, alkalinity, and calcium hardness, and add algaecide if needed to avoid water quality issues post-freeze.
**Bonus Tip**: If power outages are a concern, manually drain the water from your equipment and pipes to prevent freezing, but only do this if you're experienced or consult a professional.
