We are so honored to work with Dolly Parton Children's Hospital to support the incredible work for kids and their families!

"Organizations don't last 100 years unless they've done some things right, and BarberMcMurry has done that. One, their expertise is second to none, I think. Number two, they're just great people. They're invested in the community; they want to see the community thrive. It's more than just a project to them."

We were honored to work with UT Medical on the new Haslam Family Center for Emergency & Trauma Services, which added 30,000 square feet to the existing Emergency Department.

We had a blast participating in the community collaborative this year, envisioning a mixed use development in North Knoxville that creates a pedestrian oriented zone with ample parks, recreation spaces and residential options — all with a carbon-friendly approach to adaptive reuse of the 1940s Sears building on Central Street.

We prioritize our design culture — how we approach projects, analyze challenges and opportunities, and find meaningful & creative design solutions. For the second year in a row, BarberMcMurry's team was awarded first place at DESIGNSLAM.

DESIGNSLAM, hosted by Yes! Knoxville, is a rapid-fire charette competition, in which teams only have 60 minutes to reimagine a site in Knoxville. This year, teams competed to re-envision the Standard Knitting Mill site. Our team's design focused on regreening the former manufacturing site, adding a pedestrian greenway, and encouraging mixed use redevelopment that includes missing middle housing. The design also imagined the return of rail transportation to Knoxville, establishing the former mill as the new train station.

The Emergency Department expansion at UT Medical adds 30 patient treatment rooms, 8 intake rooms, and an innovative area and approach for "likely to discharge” patients allowing more patients to be seen more effectively. The first phase of the Haslam Family Center for Emergency & Trauma Services opened in January, with the second phase — including behavioral health and a suite for specialized treatment or extended care — set to open early in 2027.

BarberMcMurry has decades of experience in healthcare design, including work with UT Medical Center since its founding in 1956. Our designs have included UT Medical's Heart Hospital, Cancer Institute, Surgical Center, and University Orthopaedic Institute.

Congratulations, Matt! BarberMcMurry has promoted Matt Jordan, AIA, LFA, LEED AP, WELL AP to Director of Design and Partner.

Matt joined the firm in 2008. Since that time, he has been a project designer, project architect, and project manager on a variety of projects, particularly in higher education and healthcare. He has led internal initiatives as an Associate and Senior Associate — including efforts in sustainability and virtual reality, as well as being integral in BarberMcMurry’s annual Day of Service, (PARK)ing Day and design competitions. He was promoted to Design Manager and Senior Associate in 2023.

“We’re pleased to announce Matt’s appointment as Director of Design and Partner, leading the firm’s design vision. His exceptional design talent, coupled with his ability to guide and mentor others, has been — and will continue to be — instrumental in elevating the quality of our work and strengthening our team,” said Ryan Dobbs, AIA, NCARB, BarberMcMurry’s President.

“The process and culture of design at BarberMcMurry is a living thing — it constantly evolves to incorporate new technologies and address new challenges,” Jordan said. “Our task is to produce sophisticated designs that preserve unique places and perform better than ever before, while maintaining our dedication to the people we’re privileged to serve. I’m honored to help shape the future of this company with our incredible team as we continue this work.”
