Now is the best time of year to prune trees. In the winter trees growth slows way down, they store all their energy and resources in the roots so they will be ready for spring. That is why they drop theyre leaves, they arent collecting the suns rays because they are resting. So removing limbs now will limit the shock and will be easier to recover from.

When the trees growth slows down they also become less flexible and more prone to cracking and branches breaking off. So if you have branches or whole trees you are worried about now is the time to remove them before they break. Why worry when you can get a free estimate? Call 865-214-4532

Has anybody wondered what tree rings are, why they formed, or why each ring is a year? Ill tell you.

Trees grow mainly through spring, summer, and autumn adding a big or small layer depending on how good the season is. During the cold months when deciduos trees drop their leaves growth slows almost to a stop, forming the dark ring.

And this leads to the study of dendrochronology.

Dendrochronology is the study of tree rings and with experience you can read them like a book. You can tell how old they are, if an area was cleared by man or fire and when (a more open area leading to faster growth = bigger space between rings). Or if a tree was wounded and healed over like in the picture.

Now when youre in nature and see a log or stump you can learn some of the natural history in the area.

Listen to the trees they have a lot to tell.

Removing the lower branch was an obvious choice for me. It made the canopy uneven, i was sick of hitting my head on it, and it had a weak crotch which would have led to the branch breaking off in the future.

Once you identify the branch you want to remove make a cut on the bottom and one on top, this is called a "snap cut". Make each cut at least half way through the branch away from the trunk. Now if you did it right you should be able to pull down and break the branch off. It is important to make two cuts instead of just doing one straight through to prevent pealing which damages the tree.

After most of the branch is removed you will want to make a final cut just outside the collar (where the branch connects to the trunk after it tapers to the straight part of the branch).

You are left with a clean cut that will be easy for the tree to heal over.

On my way to treat the stumps of this monster invasive honeysuckle i removed the other day. It is important after removing the problem to make sure that it doesnt comeback. These things are like a hydra.

After years of doing invasive species removal at Ijams, ive found, the next best way to remove invasives (besides pulling the roots out) is to cut the stump as low to the ground as possible and then to spray the cut with herbicide. The preferred spray is something with triclopyr or glyphosate as the active ingredient, (roundup, crossbow, etc.) Try to keep it only on the stump and out of the soil.

Volcano mulching (mounding mulch up around the base of your trees) is bad practice and cause many problems for your trees.
Usually they die young from rot by always having constant moisture on the trunk; or from them putting out roots into the mulch layer instead of dirt, and over heating/drying when the muclh doesnt retain.
If they survive, girdling roots is another problem they will face (pictured below). The roots twist and strangle eachother restricting growth and stability.
When planting a tree and as it grows the root flare should be visible and the tree will do well as long as it has plenty of resources. Roots can grow further down so dont worry.

Almost every black cherry tree ive removed has been hollow like this. On of these was over a driveway and mailbox the other was leaning toward the neighbors house. Many black cherries are hollow so dont hesitate to remove them before they fall.
