The Garden Walk Horticultural

The Garden Walk Horticultural Consultation services are available to help you figure out what you have and where to start. A minimal fee usually applies.

The Garden Walk Horticultural Specialties focuses on original, yet easy to care for landscape designs that will last for decades and only grow more valuable and interesting with time. Patios, walls, or ponds can be incorporated into the space, with attention given to scaling, positioning, and making them blend into the whole picture by using appropriate materials. A Consultation is non-obligationa

l, and is never a sales pitch, it is a good way to filter some of your ideas through the eyes and experience of a professional designer and horticulturist. The Landscape Design service can help you develop a plan that will produce professional results, no matter how long you decide to take developing your property. Like a road map, it can help guide you to the landscape of your dreams, whether you are a do-it-yourselfer, or you prefer to call on some help. A very reasonable fee applies and is based on the size and intricacy of the design. Although we don't do maintenance, sometimes a good clean-up is called for, and you can expect to receive horticulturally correct pruning and transplanting, and responsible, low impact clean-up of your property.

Good late winter, all you gardeners, and 'The Garden Walk' friends. As you know from past posts, I don't really get much out there to the "network of the social", being as I don't have much to say, unless I am teaching one of the many (14, now) non-credit courses that I do for UT. But, I actually have some news to pass along concerning my business. As of 2018, I am only going to be assisting folks with their landscapes in the planning phase, by continuing with consultation service, and landscape design. An opportunity has presented itself, which will allow me to step away from residential landscape installation, while allowing me to flex my horticultural skills in the reconstruction of a property completely burned through during the Gatlinburg fire. You can come and check on the progress, if you'd like, but it will be a slow process, as 70 acres are involved. I'll leave you wondering where, right now, but will likely be documenting the progress here, in the future. Thank you for your support of The Garden Walk, in spirit, or otherwise, through the years. Good day, gardeners. It is exactly one week before the UT Non-credit fall catalog (http://noncredit.utk.edu/personal/) landscape classes start. You will have 8 courses to choose from, this fall. Please consider taking a class, or two, to amp up your working knowledge of landscaping, specifically, and horticulture, in general. All Saturday classes are scheduled for away games, and are over by noon, if you bleed orange, and wondered. Shoot me a message, if you have any questions. David E. Happy Spring! all you gardeners, landscapers, and wanna-be's. Spring fever is going around due to the weather, but I contend that there is some therapy for that. Starting tomorrow, March 2nd, I am teaching the "Landscape Plant Selection for East Tennessee" class for the UT non-credit programs. If you haven't signed up, but would like to come, call the UT Conferences and Non-credit Programs office at 974-0150, or go to their website at http://noncredit.utk.edu/Personal/. Drop down to the Landscape & Garden Design Certificate section, click on 'register for a class', and click on a class (There are 10 to choose from, currently) to see what each one is about. I guarantee that you will be informed and amused. I have gathered many a story to pass along, emphasize a point, or just amuse myself in the decades that I have been in the business. If you are not sure where to start, give me a call (607-9514) for my personal recommendations. Hope to see you there. -David

There are three more classes in the UT Non Credit Spring-Summer Catalog available. Pruning: Art and Science, is this Saturday (that's different than what the catalog says, but it's true). Home Hardscapes: Construction Tips andTechniques, is coming up on the following Saturday, the 21st. And, to finish it off for the summer, Advanced Landscape Design will be offered on the 18th of June. Then, in September, it will all start back up again.
Tell your garden-enthusiast friends about it; I believe that the non-credit courses remain a well kept secret, around here. I'd love to change that: lots of help to be given, information to be clarified, and inspiration to be had, by coming to any one of the twelve different topic landscaping classes.

Wanting to create a craftsman style house, and landscape, the Trusleys wanted nothing typical. That was inspiration for creating the 'story' for this 1920's inspired landscape, finished in 2014.

Hello, everyone. I finally had a rainy day on which I thought about doing a little updating to the page. And to give a heads up about the St. Andrews Episcopal Garden Day, at which I will be one of the guest speakers. I will start at 9:00, and be giving my tongue-in-cheek presentation of "A Farner's Gide to Plaints": A short summary of some of the East Tennessee-isms regarding plant names that I have encountered in my 25 years in the horticultural sales arena. I may have time do do a double feature, and show "The Beauty (and humor) of Creation": A ridiculous look at some of nature's dopelgangers (sp.?), and other natural world observations. It's free entry, and for a good cause, if you bid in the silent auction or purchase anything else. Give me a nudge, if you come.

I just got the newest edition of the University of Tennessee Professional and Personal Development Fall Catalog in the mail. It's always good to see, in print, that I still have a job with UT. Also interesting that for about five years, now, the description of my credentials says that I have 16 years years experience. It's probably my fault for not correcting the wording, but I only remember when I see it, which is about once a year.
I am teaching 6 classes this fall; that's as many as I have in any one catalog. To check what's on the menu, check out the PPD page at www.outreach.utk.edu, and follow the Personal Development link to Landscaping classes. See you in class.
