Installed the base for our Troyer's Birds' Paradise 16 Gourd Purple Martin complex anchored in our orchard today. Hope to see some birds this spring. Wood Duck Boxes and Delta Waterfowl Foundation Mallard Beds are next.

it’s been a very productive winter - our hens are happy! About time to start preparing the garden for spring. Garlic is all in the ground. Planted western redcedar, grand fir, ponderosa pine yesterday, with lots more to follow. Sequoia, Kinnikinnick, Salal, Nootka Rose, Blue Elderberry, Pacific Crabapple, Bitter Cherry. Makah Ozette potatoes are started. found a prolific patch of Blewitt muhrooms under the 1990’s planted Doug Firs near a property line. Roasted the first of our chickens that we raised for meat and processed here last summer and the results were amazing. Camas planting with the Cowlitz Tribe was a great experience and we have a lot of bulbs to plant in our meadow as well. Beaver has been busy as always, windstorm took this chewed alder and another chewed Ash down recently. All in all, great winter.

Wonderful time today at Kunze Farm. Emily Marie Giles thanks for the heads up on the U-Pick filberts and grapes. We had a great time and I hope to make it back out for another 20lbs!

Finally got to a beaked hazelnut tree before the squirrels and chipmunks did. Took about 10% of the nuts off the tree. Float test result was 84%. Time to grow about 111 more.

We love having native red huckleberries at the edges of our forest here in WA! I don’t remember a year where they’ve been this plentiful. They’re tiny so a little patience goes a long way when harvesting them, but they’re worth it! They’re Nature’s Sour Patch Kids 😋

We did it! We grew garlic scapes! We planted about 140 cloves last fall and they seem to be doing really well. From what I understand pulling the scapes now does two amazing things- saves the plant from sending energy to the seed head and shoot (making the bulbs we harvest in a bout a month even healthier) and delivers a delicious treat for now! I plan to incorporate them into pasta and quiche. Anyone else know of any good recipes? And we will have enough to share if anyone is interested!

Ba-GURK! My no livestock rule has collapsed under the weight of peer pressure. What’s your best rule of thumb or must know detail about raising hens?

Got this amazing coop and five hens from a friend of a friend whose landlord wouldn’t let them keep the birds. We are indebted to them for letting us steward their flock and I’m hopeful we have some good new friends out of the deal.

The kids are stoked. Mike at Fargher Lake Grange will be excited and wondering when we will be showing birds at the Clark County Fair, and trying to get us to buy a lamb or rabbits next I’m sure.

Managing some “woody residue” in our maple syrup sugarbush. Trying to get a few of our forestry units worked into shape and this one is at the top of the list.

Our stormwater management along the road swales improved markedly with some rain gardens and DNR recommended water bars.

Next step is invasive species management in this area. Still have a few non native thistles out here, some digitalis and oxeye daisy, as well as the occasional Himalayan blackberry.

Filling in the blanks today. Reforestation sure is a good time.
