River Architects

River Architects Architectural firm providing planning, architecture, and interior design services The firm started in 1981 as V. J. Schute Associates, Inc. River Architects, Inc.

In 1984, as the firm grew, our name became Schute-Larson Architects, Inc. Then in 1997, the firm’s name was changed to River Architects, Inc. Although the firm no longer has the founding partner’s name, River Architects, Inc. was deliberately selected to de-emphasize a single individual’s efforts; instead focusing on the collaborative energy of everyone in the firm. The choice of River celebrates

the place of our tri-state practice and serves as a unifying symbol of our association. River Architects was founded on four basic ideas. These ideas are the essence of our practice, and to this day, constitute who we are.
•A partner be intimately involved with each project, from concept to completion.
•Involve the client/user in a collaborative and creative process that produces responsive solutions. •Only do the type of projects for which we are qualified and in which we are interested.
•Enjoy our work. has purposely remained an architectural firm rather than a mix of architecture and engineering. Our reasoning is each project is unique, requiring different engineering skills. We believe we best meet your needs by having the freedom to select an engineer whose knowledge and experience match your project requirements. We provide planning, architecture, and interior design services in five areas of expertise: Liturgical, Higher Education, Residential, Historical, Commercial and Civic.

We are proud to celebrate the groundbreaking for the second phase of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Prairie Springs Science Center.

The expansion will add 30 classrooms, laboratories, and research spaces, while Crowley Hall will be fully demolished and completion is expected by fall 2028. The entire complex is designed to look as if it was built at one time, blending seamlessly into the existing campus context.

We are honored to collaborate on a space that carries both meaning and memory. The Betsy Thunder sculpture brings together design, landscape, and history to honor a Ho-Chunk healer whose legacy continues to shape this region—creating a space that invites both reflection and connection. We are grateful to be part of a project where design helps make history visible.

A new sculpture will be added to the Friendship Gardens in La Crosse’s Riverside Park next week. The bronze statue depicts Betsy Thunder, a Ho-Chunk medicine woman who lived in the region around the time of the Civil War. Supporters of the Friendship Gardens announced the development of the statue...

This month marks 45 years of our architectural journey—45 years of creativity and collaboration, where every project is a chapter in a larger story.
As we reflect, we’ve curated moments, memories, and milestones that show how our shared values have shaped the way we design. This isn’t nostalgia; it’s a lens for the future, honoring the people, processes, and places that continue to guide our work forward.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey. Here’s to what’s next.
