Osha (Bear Root) 🐻
If you hike in the high mountains of New Mexico (above 9,000 feet), you might find the most revered plant in the Southwest: Osha (Ligusticum porteri).
The "Bear Root"
It is often called "Bear Root" because bears are known to dig it up after hibernation. They eat it to cleanse their digestive systems and rub the chewed root on their fur to repel insects and parasites. Elders watched the bears to learn how to use it.
The Uses:
The Shepherd's Protection: Old sheepherders and hikers always carry a piece of dried Osha root in their pocket. It is widely believed that rattlesnakes despise the smell of Osha and will not come near it.
Respiratory Rescue: For severe coughs, bronchitis, or altitude sickness, a tea made from the root is drunk to open the lungs. It has a strong, spicy, celery-like scent that clears the airways immediately.
The Pocket Charm: Beyond medicine, it is used for protection against negative energy. Many people keep a small piece of the root in their car, purse, or talisman bag (bolsa) to ward off bad vibes.
