It has been a wet summer across much of the state. As vital as water is to our trees, too much of a good thing can turn bad quickly. Similar to our immune systems, when trees become stressed from environmental factors like drought, storms, or overwatering, they become more susceptible to leaf dropping, infections, and diseases. Here are a few things to look out for:

Water stress due to excessive tree watering can result in leaf wilting, gray or black spotting on leaves, leaf curling, leaf blackening, and leaf detachment. Water stress could be caused by overwatering by sprinklers, heavy rain, or planting moisture sensitive species in low, water holding areas. You can test the soil moisture using a soil moisture meter.

Suffocation caused by excessive mulching can limit gas exchange and inhibit water infiltration. This often happens when mulch is applied over 4” thick and piled around a tree trunk.

Suffocation caused by adding 3” or more of soil over existing tree roots can reduce gas exchange and suffocate a tree. Remove the excessive soil as soon as possible.

As it starts warming up across the state, many trees may begin to experience water deprivation. One of the best ways to care for your tree and combat the stress of water deprivation is to properly mulch. Mulching around your tree:

🌳Protects the tree from water evaporation
🌳Limits the growth of grass, lowering the need for lawn mowers and w**d eaters close to the tree which often result in physical damage
🌳Slowly decays over time, providing nutrients for the soil

It is soon time to mulch your trees this spring. It should be 2-3" thick in a circle around the tree at least to the canopy’s edge and shouldn’t be touching the bark. You want it to resemble a deflated donut, NOT a volcano.

Are your oak trees dropping a lot of acorns? When trees produce and drop an abundance of nuts or fruits, the phenomenon is known as masting. While there is no exact science behind why trees do this, trees typically have a mast year every two to five years.

The number of acorns a tree drops during masting will depend on the age and size of the tree. While older trees typically produce the most, it takes nearly five to 10 years for new trees to begin producing acorns.

Masting is a natural cycle for trees and one thing we’re sure of is that squirrels and deer are very happy when it happens. If your tree is dropping acorns but at a smaller scale, that means your tree is not in mast but is still dropping acorns as part of its natural cycle.

If your trees are masting, drop a photo for us to see!
