At our monthly meeting, Mary Cutler spoke about the Homegrown National Park Project. Mary is the Tippecanoe County Naturalist and Environmental Educator with the Tippecanoe County Parks and Recreation Department. We were informed that 83% of land in the United States is privately owned. It is our responsibility to plant appropriately in our yards to restore biodiversity.

A few steps to help restore biodiversity:

1. Shrink the lawn
2. Remove invasive species
3. Plant keystone genra
4. Be generous with your plantings
5. Reduce your nighttime light pollution
6. Network with neighbors & get on the Homegrown National Park Map
7. Build a conservation hardscape
8. Create caterpillar pupation sites under your trees
9. Do not spray or fertilize
10. Education your neighborhood civic association - start a new HABITAT
