What is “extraction economics” and why is it killing American consumers?

In the hvac industry this looks like companies that maximize profit on every single opportunity. In service this looks like pushy sales and replacements that are not needed. In construction this looks like constant change orders over small, nit-picky items. We intentionally reject extraction economics and focus on relational transactions- where you call us because you trust us to take care of you. Businesses that use extraction economics suffer sustainability problems because the market cannot handle dishonest and expensive work. How does this affect consumers? When businesses choose extraction economics, the pressure for profit is suddenly taken off of the business and put on the customer. Profit is driven by taking advantage of customers at every opportunity possible. When choosing any product or service, no matter the industry, choose the business that puts relationships first.

I would like to share a write up that I found regarding indoor air quality and the new aerosol "air cleaners". If you are looking for REAL indoor air quality solutions, give us a call.

The Illusion of "Clean" Air: Why Aerosol Sprays are Not the Solution
In an effort to keep our indoor spaces safe, many reach for a can of disinfectant spray. However, the idea that you can "clean" the air by adding more chemicals to it is a dangerous misconception. To truly protect our health, we must shift our focus from chemical intervention to mechanical filtration and ventilation.
The Chemical Paradox: Killing Viruses vs. Protecting Tissue
The fundamental problem with aerosolized disinfectants is that the chemicals designed to destroy viral proteins and lipid envelopes do not discriminate. Any chemical potent enough to kill a virus in the air can also attack human soft tissue.
When you spray these substances, you create a fine mist that is easily inhaled deep into the lungs. These reactive agents can cause:
Inflammation of the respiratory tract.
Irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes.
Long-term damage to lung elasticity and function.
Products like Lysol are often marketed as a catch-all for household safety. While they are effective at disinfecting hard, non-porous surfaces (like a countertop), they are not intended for constant air purification. Relying on these sprays to "clean" the air results in a buildup of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in your living space, essentially replacing biological contaminants with chemical ones.
EPA approval of a disinfectant does not mean the product is "safe" for constant inhalation. The EPA registers these products as pesticides. Their approval signifies that the product works as labeled for specific surfaces, not that it is healthy to breathe in an enclosed space.
Marketing vs. Reality
Just because a product is heavily advertised or sits on a supermarket shelf does not guarantee its safety for your lungs. Marketing often prioritizes the "scent" of clean (like lemon or pine) over actual air quality. In reality, a "clean smell" is often just a mask for high concentrations of synthetic fragrances and chemicals.
The Four Pillars of Real Air Quality
If we cannot spray our way to clean air, how do we achieve it? True air quality relies on a physical approach rather than a chemical one:
Monitors: You cannot manage what you do not measure. Use CO2 and POC monitors to understand your air quality in real-time.
Source Control: The best way to clean air is to stop the pollutant from entering in the first place (indoor smoking, removing or preventing mold, animal dander).
Filtration: High-efficiency filters (like HEPA) physically trap viruses, dust, and allergens without adding harmful byproducts to the air.
Dilution (Ventilation): Bringing in fresh outdoor air dilutes the concentration of indoor pollutants. This is often as simple as opening a window or increasing the "air exchange rate" of an HVAC system.
By focusing on these four pillars, you can create a truly healthy environment without the respiratory risks associated with aerosol chemicals.
