Late February through early March is the best time in Louisiana to tackle your garden clean-up and fresh mulch!

Hey friends!

The temperatures are dipping, and while Louisiana winters are usually mild, even a short cold snap can shock our plants. Here are a few easy ways to protect your garden when the cold creeps in.🌙✨

🌿 Cover them up
Use frost cloth, old sheets, or lightweight blankets to cover plants overnight. Just make sure the cover goes all the way to the ground to trap warmth.

💧 Water before the freeze
Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil and helps protect roots from freezing temperatures. Luckily for us, the ground is already well-soaked right now, which actually works in our favor during these cold nights.

🪴 Bring potted plants inside
If it’s in a pot, it’s vulnerable. Move them into a garage, porch, or indoors until temperatures warm back up.

🌳 Mulch, mulch, mulch
Add a thick layer of mulch around the base of plants to insulate roots and keep soil temperatures stable.

✂️ Don’t prune yet
It’s tempting—but wait! Pruning before a cold snap can expose plants to damage. Let them stay cozy and protected.

It’s one of the easiest and most underrated things you can do for your garden beds.

Mulch helps keep weeds down, locks in moisture, adds nutrients to the soil, and instantly makes your yard look fresh and clean.

And it’s something that should be routinely refreshed twice a year to keep your beds healthy and looking their best.

As we head into fall and winter, mulch becomes even more important — it insulates plant roots, protects against sudden temperature drops, reduces soil erosion, and helps your plants come back stronger in the spring.
