Magnolias are ancient flowering plants that date back over 100 million years, making them older than bees; they originally evolved to be pollinated by beetles. They belong to the genus Magnolia, which includes more than 200 species of trees and shrubs found mainly in Asia and the Americas. Many magnolia species are evergreen, especially those in warmer climates, while others are deciduous and shed their leaves in fall. Their flowers are known for being large and fragrant, often blooming in early spring before the leaves appear, though some varieties bloom later in summer. Magnolias also have tough, leathery petals (technically called tepals) that help protect against damage from pollinating insects.
